Need to send a notice to everyone at MCG about a policy change? Is your department hosting a campuswide event? Have you been awarded a research grant that the media should know about?

To meet the diverse communications needs of MCG faculty, staff and students, The Division of University Advancement has several communications vehicles. The following is a list of internal and external communications venues and contact info for each:

Media Relations/External Announcements –  The MCG Office of Media Relations works to provide the news media with timely, relevant information about MCG’s research, educational and faculty activities and to meet the media’s requests for information. The office works closely with the MCG Health, Inc., public relations staff, which handles media coverage of the clinical work of MCG physicians within the MCG Health System.

Media Relations Director Toni Baker (ext. 1-4421), is the university’s primary liaison with the media and handles faculty and research news for the Schools of Medicine and Graduate Studies. Jennifer Hilliard (ext. 1-8604) handles faculty and research news for the Schools of Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry and Nursing. Kim Miller (ext. 1-8605) handles education news for all five schools, such as innovative curriculum changes, increases in class size and student features. Mary Crowley, office specialist, disseminates the news to media outlets and provides other administrative support.

MCG Web site, www.mcg.edu – The campus Web site receives nearly 2 million hits a month from visitors across the globe including prospective students or residents, their parents, patients, researchers, media personnel or colleagues of MCG faculty. News and links on the MCG Web site should be targeted to an external audience. Through the Web Content Office, the Division of University Advancement is working with Web managers across campus to ensure Web sites maintain consistency with the MCG mission, vision and values. For assistance with your unit’s Web site, contact Sandra Morgan, Web content specialist, at ext. 1-9322; or Jack Evans, Web content administrator, at ext. 1-8606.

MyMCG Portal/Internal Announcements – Often news and event announcements are germane to only members of the MCG community and not the general public – i.e. reminders of benefits changes or parking registration deadlines. These items are most efficiently presented in a format accessible only to students, faculty and staff. The MyMCG Web Portal, launched in 2005, is a venue for every MCG employee to access personal data, such as their leave balance, in addition to announcements about MCG events and policies. A Need To Know announcements section of the portal is available for any member of the MCG community to submit a notice by e-mailing NEEDTOKNOW@mcg.edu

Events Calendar – Classes, meetings, celebrations and more are posted on the Events Calendar at http://calendar.mcg.edu/.  Events are listed on calendars categorized by schools, function (administrative operation – such as PeopleSoft or Banner), or general interest to a particular constituency (such as students, faculty or Wellness Center members.) E-mail subscriptions to a particular calendar are free and provide a regular update in a specific category. Daily event summaries are listed as “Today at MCG” on the MyMCG Portal. Instructions for submitting to the Events Calendar are available at www.mcg.edu/announcements/HowToAdd.htm.

Beeper – The Beeper is the institution’s official print communications vehicle. Printed every two weeks, the Beeper is distributed to all employees of MCG and MCG Health, Inc. via campus mail. MCG retirees and corporate partners receive the paper via U.S. mail. Students, patients and campus visitors receive the Beeper via 12 newsstands located in hospital and campus buildings. The Beeper also is available online at www.mcg.edu/news/beeper. Send story ideas or announcements through campus mail to Beeper Editor, FI-1042, call ext. 1-2124, or fax ext. 1-6397. For information about advertising, visit www.graphic365.com or call 706-860-5455.
