Graduate Research Day coming March 16-17

The School of Graduate Studies will host the 22nd annual Graduate
Research Day, March 16-17.
The MCG community is invited to support trainees by attending oral
presentations by postdoctoral fellows March 16 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in room
2109, of Phase 2 of the Interdisciplinary Research Building. A poster
session for students and fellows will be held March 17, from 10 a.m. to noon
in the Wellness Center. An awards banquet for outstanding student research
will be held March 28 in the Alumni Center.
Dr.
Masashi Yanagisawa, investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and
Patrick E. Haggerty Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University of
Texas Southwestern Medical Center, will be the keynote speaker, Friday,
March 17 at 12:30 in room 1101 of the Hamilton Wing of the Sanders Research
and Education Building. Dr. Yanagisawa will discuss “Genetic Misadventures
from Orphan GPCRs to Feeding, Sleep, and Emotion.”
A member of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Yanagisawa is best
known for his discovery of novel peptides, endothelin and orexin, involved
in regulating life-sustaining processes such as circulation, feeding, and
sleep. This work has led to a new understanding and treatment of a variety
of diseases such as Hirschsprung’ s disease, pulmonary hypertension,
narcolepsy and eating disorders.
Dr. Yanagisawa received both his medical degree and a doctorate in
medical sciences from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, where he also
completed a fellowship in pharmacology.
