General Residency Information
Patient Rounds
Rounds are made with the faculty and residents on a daily basis. Rounds
occur at MCG Hospital, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and/or the
Children's Medical Center depending on your rotation for the month.
Call Schedule
On average PGY-2 residents are on call no more than every fourth night. PGY-2
residents are required to stay in-house when they are on call. A sleep room
and a meal allowance are provided for in-house call.
PGY-3 and 4 residents are on home call an average of one out of every seven
nights.
All residents are allowed on average at least one full day out of every
seven with no duties. Please note this is an average and due to coverage and
responsibilities residents may not get one day off every seven, but will
receive the equivalency within each calendar month.

Time Off
Each resident is allowed 21 days off for annual leave, to be taken in 7 day
blocks. Annual leave does not accrue from year to year.
Each resident is given 7 days per year of leave to attend educational
conferences.
Residents are allowed 5 days for off-campus interviews.
Residents are allocated 14 days of sick leave per year and may accrue to a
maximum of 21 days. After the first year 7 days of sick leave may carry
over.
Annual, conference, and educational leave dates are subject to the approval
of the resident's attending, chief resident and program director. Leave
requests should be submitted 30 days ahead of time.
Education Conferences
Morning Report -- Daily education session with ward attending and residents.
Residents on call present cases seen during the previous night and these
cases are used as discussion for the day's educational session.
Monday Resident Conferences -- These weekly conferences give instruction in
a variety of areas ranging from neurologic disorders to specific case
discussions.
Neuromuscular Conference -- Monthly conference focused around neuromuscular
disorders and their treatment.
Neuroradiology Conference -- Weekly teaching session educating residents in
reading films and applying this to the treatment of their patients.
GME Lecture Series -- Lecture series provided by the Graduate Medical
Education office to give residents training in areas not provided by the
Department of Neurology.
Grand Rounds -- Weekly conference with topics ranging from case
presentations to the latest treatments in neurology. This conference
frequently has visiting professors from around the nation. One week per
month is focused on Pediatric Neurology.
Professor Rounds -- Weekly education session where the ward resident chooses
a challenging case and an attending goes over the case and the group
discusses treatment options and other issues regarding the case.
Friday Lecture Series -- This weekly lecture series encompasses several
series of lectures throughout the year. These sessions include a block for
neuroanatomy, urgent neurology, child neurology, neuromuscular disorders,
stroke, epilepsy, and other areas of importance.
Neuropathology -- Monthly conference with pathology faculty.
Epilepsy Conference -- Monthly conference focusing on epilepsy treatment and
new medications available in this area.
Stroke Conference -- Monthly conference with an emphasis on stroke
treatment, new treatment modalities, and case presentations.
M & M Conference -- Departmental morbidity and mortality review.
Other Benefits
Resident benefits include group health insurance for the resident,
malpractice insurance, group life insurance, disability insurance and parking. Dental insurance, health insurance for the
resident's family, and additional life insurance are available at an
additional cost.
Approximately 210 third-year medical students rotate through the Department
of Neurology each year. Our residents assume roles of mentor, teacher, and
advisor.
