Implanted Electrodes
Patients whose seizures cannot be pinpointed Video EEG and
other diagnostic testing may require a implanted electrodes, or Phase
II. During the Phase II evaluation, you will undergo Video EEG
monitoring with implanted cranial electrodes in an attempt to localize more
precisely the area of seizure onset. The electrodes are implanted by
one of the programs neurosurgeons. Approximately 40% of surgical
candidate will require Phase II evaluation. Types of intracranial
electrodes include depth electrodes placed directly into brain structures and
subdural strip or grid electrodes placed over the cortical surface of the
brain. An advanced computer system allows MRI-directed stereotactic implantation of depth electrodes into specific brain structure. After
implantation, patients again are monitoring in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
for one-to-two weeks. Recommendation for surgery requires the
recording of multiple seizures with localized seizure onset.
