General Description

Researchers in the Department of Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia have been studying stroke in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) since the 1980s. Our goal is to promote screening, treatment and prevention strategies for those at highest risk.

The long-term objective is to better understand the relationship between SCD and cerebrovascular disease and to make available the best neurodiagnostic and interventional therapies to lessen the cerebrovascular burden of SCD, especially on children, who bear the brunt of stroke morbidity in this disorder.
