Steve Harrison received his BS and MS degrees in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Art Education at the Univ. of Georgia.

After graduation, he held positions at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and at the Univ. of Texas Health Sciences Center at Dallas. Steve was also the Medical Art Director at the Arizona Heart Institute, and was Artist-in-Residence at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

Steve has been an active member of the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) since 1972; he is a Fellow of the AMI and past Chairman of the Board of Governors. He has won many awards for his illustrations including an Emmy Award (Rocky Mountain), several CINE Golden Eagles and awards from the Chicago and New York film festivals. In 2006, Steve received the prestigious Brödel Award for Excellence in Education from the AMI.

Bill Andrews received his BA in Art from the Univ. of Texas at Austin and his MA in Biomedical Communications from the Univ. of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Health Promotion, Education and Behavior at the Univ. of South Carolina, Columbia.

Bill began his professional career as a medical illustrator at the Univ. of Arizona Health Science Center at Tucson before moving to Houston, Texas in 1981. He worked in varying capacities in the Texas Medical Center, including as Art Director for the Texas Heart Institute and as Manager of Medical Illustration & Graphic Design Services at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He was honored to join the MCG faculty in 1999, where he is now an Associate Professor. He serves as Education Program Coordinator and Gallery Director.

Bill has won numerous professional awards and has had works included in juried exhibits around the world. Bill has presented numerous seminars and workshops across the United States and in Canada, England, France, Italy and the Netherlands.

He has been an active Professional member of the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) for more than twenty-five years. He has served as President of the AMI and on the Board of Governors, and is a Fellow of the AMI. Bill has been Editor of the national newsletter and Editor for the Source Book of Medical Illustration. Bill has been a Certified Medical Illustrator since 1993. He is currently the Commissioner for the AMI to the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

In 1988, Bill became the founding President of the Vesalius Trust, an educational foundation supporting research and education in visual communications for the health sciences. He is currently Vice President and Historian of the Trust.

Bill's teaching areas of interest include: line and color illustration in both traditional and digital media, as well as visual problem-solving, linear and non-linear storytelling, communication theory, learning resource managment and business practices. His research interests include health education, visual perception, history of medical illustration, communication theory and business practices.

Andrew Swift received his BS in Biology in 1990 from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. Upon graduating from college Andrew taught environmental education on the coast of Georgia then served in the Peace Corps in Ecuador South America. He then attended Augusta State University and later the Art Students League of New York. Andrew earned his MS in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia in 1999.

Following graduation, Andrew worked as an Assistant Professor at MCG with a joint appointment in the Department of Medical Illustration and the Department of Surgery, Section of Neurosurgery. Andrew was honored to become full-time faculty in the Medical Illustration Graduate Program in December, 2000. In late 2007, he became part-time faculty.

Andrew has been a Professional Member of the Association of Medical Illustrators since 2000, and was recognized as a Certified Medical Illustrator in 2002.

Emeritus Faculty

Our emeritus faculty have demonstrated a lifetime of service and dedication to the academic program and to the profession. Their wealth of experience and expertise are highly valued by the program.


Octavia Garlington was born in the Republic of Panama and lived in the Panama Canal Zone until she left for college in 1945. She received her baccalaureate degree in biology from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC., and shortly after accepted a position at Agnes Scott College in the biology department and later worked as Assistant to the Dean Students. Nine years and afew art courses later, Octavia became a member of the Class of 1961 in the Medical Illustration Graduate Program at the Medical College of Georgia.

After graduation, Octavia remained at MCG to become an Instructor in the program, eventually moving up through the ranks to full Professor. She served briefly as Chief of Art Services, Division of Biomedical Communications at MCG, and later served as Acting Director of the graduate program for a period. In 1968, she helped to design the faculty regalia for the Medical College of Georgia, and in 1984 she designed the MCG flag. Octavia retired from daily teaching responsibilities in 1990. As an Emerita Professor, Octavia participates in special seminars on the history of medical illustration and on the development of the Medical Illustration Graduate Program.

Octavia has been very active in the profession of medical illustration. She has been a Professional Member of the Association of Medical Illustrators since 1964. She has served on the Board of Governors for a total of twenty years, has held the offices of Vice Chairman, Vice President and Corresponding Secretary, and has chaired numerous important committees in the organization. In 1988 she was elected a Fellow of the AMI.

During a long and distinguished career Octavia has received many awards and honors. She twice has received the Outstanding Service Award from the Association of Medical Illustrators. In 2001, Octavia received the Brödel Award for Excellence in Education from the AMI. Here at MCG, Octavia was elected to Alpha Eta, the honor society for Allied Health Science, and has received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the School of Allied Health Sciences. She also twice has received the Distinguished Service Award from the MCG Faculty Organization. In 2004, Octavia received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Allied Health Sciences Alumni Association.

David Mascaro received his BS and MS degrees in medical illustration from MCG in 1969. Prior to his medical illustration training he received extensive fine arts training at The Art Students League, The National Academy of Fine Arts and The School of Visual Arts, all in New York City. After receiving his MS degree in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia, he accepted a medical illustrator position at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, New York. David returned to MCG in 1971 to teach in the Medical Illustration Graduate Program.

David has published numerous articles on the use of color in medical illustration, has conducted many national and regional workshops on color theory, and was an active member of the Association of Medical Illustrators. David helped to revise the illustrative work begun by the late Dr. Frank Netter for the CIBA Pharmaceutical Company.

Capping a 29-year career in teaching at MCG, David was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award from the School of Allied Health Sciences on April 20, 2000. David retired from daily teaching responsibilities June 30, 2000. Later that summer, the program established the David J. Mascaro Teaching Gallery of Medical Illustration as a lasting tribute to the teacher and artist.

As an Emeritus Professor David presents special lectures on color theory and watercolor technique, and participates in assignment critiques.

William (Bill) J. Stenstrom, EdD hails from Spokane, and attended high school in Seattle. He went on to earn a BS in zoology from the University of Washington in Seattle. From 1949 – 1952, Bill attended the School of Medical Illustration at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he received his Certificate in Medical Illustration.

Upon graduation from Mass General, he took a position as Chief, Medical Illustration Laboratory with the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital in Seattle. Two years later, in 1954, he moved back to Boston to become the medical illustrator in ophthalmology at Harvard University Medical School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. In addition to his duties as an illustrator, Bill also joined the medical illustration faculty at the Mass General program as an Instructor. In 1966, he moved west to become an Assistant Professor in the Medical Art program at University of Texas Health Science Center, Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. From 1967 to 1968, he served as an ophthalmic illustrator in Houston before returning to the Southwestern Medical Center, this time as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Assistant Professor of Medical Illustration.

In 1975, Bill arrived in Augusta, Georgia to take the position as Program Director and Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Illustration at the Medical College of Georgia. In addition to fulfilling his teaching and administrative duties, Bill earned his Master of Education degree from Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, Georgia in 1980. Three years later Bill was elevated to Professor. In 1989, Bill received his Doctorate in Education from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.

During his career, Bill was very active in the Association of Medical Illustrators and the Biological Photographic Association (now BioCommunications Association), as well as other biomedical communication organizations. In the AMI, Bill served two terms on the Board of Governors and on numerous committees. He held the office of President twice and served as the Chairman of the Board of Governors. Bill was elected a Fellow of the AMI in 1988. In the BPA, he served on the Board of Governors and was President of the Southwest Chapter. He was elected Fellow of the BPA in 1988.

Through the years, Bill received many awards and honors for his artwork, including the Will Shepard Award and the Ralph Sweet Award from the AMI. His work has been included in numerous publications and exhibitions around the world. For his excellence in service and teaching, Bill has received the Louis Schimdt Award from the BioCommunications Association, in 2001, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the AMI, in 1994. From the School of Allied Health Sciences, Bill received the Distinguished Service Award, in 1991, and the Outstanding Faculty Award, in 1982. Bill was elected to the Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and Alpha Eta national honor societies.

In 1991, Bill retired from active service, becoming Chairman and Professor Emeritus of the program. He now resides in North Carolina. Ever the willing teacher, though, he returns to Augusta each year to present a lecture to our students on the anatomy of the eye and ophthalmological illustration.

Joyce Mentel is originally from Michigan. Joyce has lived in Augusta since 1984, and has been with the Medical College of Georgia since 1985. She became the Administrative Specialist for the Dept. of Medical Illustration in 1991, and was promoted to Office Manager in 2005. Joyce is married, and has 4 beautiful grandchildren.
