This page provides detailed information about the application procedure and admission requirements for the Medical Illustration Graduate Program.

Download the Applicant Preliminary Evaluation Form (PDF).

Our program actively seeks students from diverse backgrounds. Successful applicants have included art majors, biologists and surgeons. They have come from Europe, South America and nearly every state in the union. Each year, 40 to 50 individuals submit portfolios and preliminary evaluation materials. Of these, approximately half appear to meet the the program's art and academic criteria. These individuals are invited to submit formal application materials for evaluation, and are scheduled for an interview. From this group, upon successful completion of the interview, a class is chosen.

Admission to the Medical Illustration Graduate Program requires the fulfillment of several important criteria. The criteria are:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
  • Advanced ability in drawing the human figure from direct observation
  • Sound draftsmanship in rendering from direct observation, including expression of contour, proportion, perspective, form, light and shadow, tonal values and surface textural detail
  • Accurate interpretation of color in realistic still life studies
  • Completion of the following prerequisite courses:
    • Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy or Vertebrate Morphology with student dissections of a mammal
    • Human Physiology
    • Life Drawing from the nude model, including advanced-level courses
    • Advanced courses in realistic drawing or painting from observation
    • Basic Photography (including camera and darkroom experience)
    • Proficiency in computer graphics demonstrated by portfolio samples of both vector (e.g., Adobe Illustrator™, Macromedia Freehand™ or CorelDraw™) and raster (e.g., Adobe Photoshop™ or Corel Painter™) computer images
  • Also strongly recommended:
    • Science: Histology, Embryology, Invertebrate Anatomy, Cell Biology
    • Art: Basic Design, Color Theory, Graphic Design, Sculpture, Perspective
  • A personal interview and portfolio review with the program faculty (by invitation only after approval of preliminary application)
  • A combined score of 1000 or better in the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

Although a specific baccalaureate degree is not required, many of the students applying to our program have earned an art degree with a major in pre-medical illustration or an interdisciplinary degree in scientific illustration. More information about some of these undergraduate programs may be found be contacting the organizations listed on the Links page.
