Populate an EndNote Library: Direct Connect to Database (PubMed)

EndNote connects directly to remote databases like PubMed’s MEDLINE and may be searched using the EndNote search interface (similar to how an EndNote Library is searched).

The advantages of connecting directly to a database like PubMed’s MEDLINE:

  • ease of transferring references from the database into an EndNote Library, similar to EndNote’s direct export
  • retrieved references may be selected before transfer into an EndNote Library

The disadvantages of EndNote connecting directly to a database like PubMed’s MEDLINE:

  • EndNote does not assist inexperienced users in selecting subject or search terms
  • EndNote does not maintain a search history or display how a search was interpreted
  • differences between the EndNote search interface and the database's search interface may affect search results
    • EndNote's interface may not have identical search access points and limits as found in the database's own interface
    • EndNote's connection filter must be as up-to-date as the database it searches

To use Direct Connection with PubMed’s MEDLINE:

  1. Open EndNote 7.0.
  2. Tool > Connect > Connect submenu.
  3. From Connect list, choose PubMed (NLM). (If desired database is not displayed, select Connect... and highlight the connection file for the database from a list, then Connect.)
  4. EndNote Search PubMed MEDLINE at PubMed (NLM) box opens. (Search Remote box is checked.)
  5. Enter search terms and fields (Fig. 11), click Search.
  6. Confirm Remote Search opens, click OK to continue or Cancel to edit search.
  7. A new EndNote Retrieved References Window downloads and holds the references (Fig. 12).
  8. To mark some references for transfer to EndNote:
    1. Edit > Output Styles > Show All
    2. Click on reference and view content in Preview Window.
    3. Hold Ctrl key and click on references to retain.
    4. Click "Copy__References to [EndNote Library]."
  9. If retaining all references, click the Copy ALL References to and designate the EndNote Library to receive the references (Fig. 12).

Other copy methods to move references from EndNote Retrieved References Window to the EndNote Library include "drag and drop" and "cut and paste."
