COMPUTING TIPS:
Avoiding Data Loss

The following guidelines should help your computing experience at the Greenblatt Library be one of ease rather
than hardship.
1. When you create a new document, save it immediately, giving it a descriptive name.
2. Save your document regularly. One save after every page should be sufficient.
3. Keep a backup copy of your disk. This requires that you have two disks.
To make a backup copy of your disk:
A. Double-click on the computer icon on the desktop.
B. Right-click on the "3 1/2 floppy" icon in the window.
C. Select "Copy Disk" from the list
D. Follow the instructions on the screen.

It is recommended that you do this regularly to keep your backup current.

NOTE: This process makes a replica of your original disk, so the second disk that you use should NOT contain any data that you intend to keep. It WILL be erased.

NOTE: If you require assistance, ask someone at the LInC.

4. Buy your own disk; do not share with others or swap them out while you are working on documents. Disks are available for sale at the LInC.
5. Avoid saving your documents on the hard disk of any computer that you use in the Library. Any data that is saved to the hard disks of lab computers is subject to erasure without warning.
6. Carry your disks in a container designed to hold them so that they are not damaged.
7. Do not leave your disks in your car. Extreme temperatures will cause damage to the disks.
8. Start with new disks every semester. Disks do degrade from wear and tear.
9. If you work on your documents at home and want to bring them in to be printed and or edited:
  • Before you leave home, load the document and select "Save As" and save the document as a rich text document. It is recommended that you do this before leaving the library as well. This way you will be able to edit the document wherever you take it.
10. If the computer locks up while you are editing your word processing:
A. Press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Delete> to reboot the computer. If this doesn’t work,
B. Turn the computer off, wait one minute, then turn the computer back on.
C. Go back and launch the word processor that you were using. If you had been working for more than ten minutes since your last save, your document should have been autosaved. Your document should either appear automatically when you launch the application or you will be prompted to open it.
11. If the computer loses power while you are editing your word processing:
  • Go back and launch the word processor that you were using. If you had been working for more than ten minutes since your last save, your document should have been autosaved. Your document should either appear automatically when you launch the application or you will be prompted to open it.
12. If you require any assistance, ask someone at the Library Information Center (LInC).
