Virtual Services Librarian/Instructor-Associate Professor

The Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library invites applications for Virtual Services Librarian, a position responsible for the dynamic development, operation and deliverables of the Greenblatt Library’s virtual services. The position provides technical expertise regarding library information systems and digital library planning, supports virtual library development, works closely with other Library faculty and staff and reports to the Chair, Content Management.

The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is the only academic institution in Georgia dedicated exclusively to the health sciences. It has over 2,000 students in its Schools of Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Studies, Medicine and Nursing, a hospital with over 80 specialty clinics and centers and an award winning Children’s Medical Center.

Augusta, located along the banks of the Savannah River adjacent to South Carolina, has a population of over 200,000. It is the second oldest city in Georgia and is rich in history and architectural diversity. Host of the renowned Masters Golf Tournament each spring, the springtime display of azaleas and dogwoods has earned the city the title of the "Garden City." With mild winters and tropical summers, Augusta attracts history buffs, nature lovers, art and museum visitors and sports fans.

Responsibilities

The Virtual Services Librarian (VSL) is responsible for the quality maintenance, assessment and improvement outcomes to the Library’s virtual presence on the Medical College of Georgia’s website. In the role of liaison to the institution, the VSL communicates amongst the Divisions of Information Technology, External and Governmental Relations and the Library to assure continual access to electronic resources by faculty, staff, and students on and off campus, as well as compliance with institutional standards. The VSL coordinates provision of electronic resources with the faculty and staff of Content Management.  The VSL communicates timely changes to the faculty and staff of the Library’s Education and Information department ensuring the currency of instructional materials and classes. As a faculty member, teaching is expected in the form of staff development and classes for faculty, staff, and students.  Occasional off-hour responsibilities are expected to ensure responsive virtual Library Internet services to customers. The VSL will fulfill faculty responsibilities as a member of the Corps of Instruction.

Qualifications

The Virtual Services Librarian shall have a Masters degree from an ALA accredited institution, experience in an academic library, and the ability to function as a faculty member in the areas of education, scholarship, and service.

The successful candidate must have knowledge of several Internet development languages and programs such as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Server-side Hypertext Markup Language (SHTML), Extensible Markup Language (XML), Dynamic HTML (DHTML), Microsoft ASP (Active Server Pages), ASP.NET, Java, Front Page, etc.

In addition, the candidate will be expected to have knowledge of various programs and applications such as SQL Server, Microsoft Office suite, Visual Basic, PhotoShop, QuarkXpress.

The successful candidate will be collaborative, innovative and skilled at communication, multi-tasking, and project management.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Experience in an academic health science environment, a specialist certificate in advanced library or information science, knowledge of EZProxy, Endeavor/Voyager, Ovid and ILLiad systems may be given preference in the review of applicants.

Salary & Benefits

The position has faculty status (non-tenure track) and rank. Benefits include a competitive package, TIAA/CREF, and other retirement options. The minimum salary is $40,000, depending on experience. Priority review of applicants will begin October 15 and continue until the position is filled.
