Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library

The Library, established in 1834 and named after prominent MCG physician, Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. in 1988, provides resources and services for the health information needs of the faculty, staff and students of the Medical College of Georgia and serves as a source of health information for the state of Georgia.

Location
Library departments and programs are primarily located in the Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library on Laney-Walker Boulevard next to the Administration Building.

A Clinical Services Librarian is available most days in the hospital and clinics. She keeps hours in the Department of Medicine’s Library (Room 5082) and in the Pediatric Library on the first floor of the Children’s Medical Center. Hours are posted weekly. Mon-Thurs 7:30 a.m.- midnight
Friday 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Sunday 12:00 noon - midnight
The Library is closed or has reduced hours during holiday periods. The schedule will be publicized.

Library Use
A library barcode entitles its owner full library privileges. Faculty, staff and students may obtain a library barcode by presenting their current MCG picture identification badge at the Library Information Center (LInC).

Library Information Center (LInC)
The LInC is the starting point for providing all library services. It is prominently located as you enter the library. The phone number for the LInC is 721-3441.

Finding Information
Librarians and other trained staff are available to help users determine the best resources for their needs and provide help and instruction in using the resources. Staff also will find quick facts for users in person, by phone (721-3441) or via email (http://www.mcg.edu/library/Reference/questions.html).

Borrowing Materials
A current MCG ID with library barcode is needed to borrow materials.
Books—four weeks
Bound journals—three days
Unbound journals—one day
Audiovisuals—three days
Computer software—does not check out

Interlibrary Loan
Materials unavailable at MCG are acquired for a cost recovery fee by utilizing electronic connections to hundreds of libraries worldwide or through commercial document suppliers. Copyright guidelines are followed.

University System Library Privileges
The resources of the University System Libraries in Georgia are available to current MCG Library users.

Conference Room Reservation
Several conference rooms and electronic classrooms may be reserved for meetings or special classes. http://www.mcg.edu/library/Services/RoomSched.html

Resources
The Library provides an extensive collection of biomedical books, journals and audiovisuals, computer programs, databases, internet resources and various special collections including university publications and historical archives.

Electronic Resources
Electronic resources are available at library workstations and most of them are also available through web access at campus workstations and remotely from home or distance education sites.

Reserves
Materials on reserve are listed on GIL@MCG and are located at the LInC. Materials are put on reserve by faculty to support course instruction for students.

Student E-Mail
Student E-mail services (Groupwise) are provided through the Library.

Specialized Services
Reference and Consultation
Library faculty are available for in-depth reference assistance and consultation for access, evaluation, and management of information resources. Mediated searches are available for a basic fee. The Clinical Services Librarian attends rounds and morning report in selected departments.

Education
Classes for Ovid, GIL@MCG, GALILEO, EndNote, Evidence Based Medicine, and the Internet can be arranged throughout the year. Library faculty provide curriculum support through tailored classes on information management and retrieval. Workshops on specific library resources and skills are available by request.

Collection Development
  • Book recommendations: The Library purchases materials recommended by faculty using the guidelines of the Collection Development Policy and within the constraints of the collection budget. 721-9906
  • Journal recommendations: The Collection Development Committee evaluates requests for new journal titles annually. Addition of a new title requires a continuing commitment, and a variety of factors are considered before adding a title. 721-9906
  • Audiovisuals, computer software and other media: These resources are added to support directly the curriculum and the development and delivery of educational technology.

Facilities
Photocopiers, paging phones, conference rooms, group study rooms, individual locked carrels and lockers are available in the library.

Conference Room Reservation
Several conference rooms and electronic classrooms may be reserved for meetings or special classes.

Computer Lab
Computers are available with networked printers, access to the internet and common productivity applications.

Development Lab
The Development Lab is available for use of library and reserve materials on computer. In addition, software and hardware are available for development of multimedia programs and presentations including scanners for graphics and text, PhotoShop, PowerPoint and QuickTime.

Electronic Classrooms
Threeclassrooms are available for instruction in a networked environment. Each room has multiple student computer stations and an instructor station linked to a projection system.
