Serials Overview

Serials - journals - periodicals - magazines - at the Greenblatt Library, these items are all treated alike. There are over 1,200 current active subscriptions received. The Library receives the "top" health science publications, such as JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, and American Journal of Nursing as well as other major publications of a more specific nature.

Serials holdings are listed on GIL - (GALILEO Interconnected Libraries), online catalog which provides the location of books, audiovisuals and journals owned by Greenblatt Library. MCG faculty, students and staff can also use GIL to determine the library materials they have checked out, fines and holds.

All serials holdings are shelved on the second floor, alphabetically by title, using every word in the title, e.g., Journal
of the South Carolina Medical Association. Titles known and indexed by their initials (e.g., JAMA) are shelved at the start of the holdings in that letter of the alphabet.

Unbound Journals
Unbound journals are shelved at the back of the second floor, on slant- front stacks: the most current issue is displayed on the front; other unbound issues are found by lifting up these hinged shelves. Unbound serials items may be checked out for one day.

Bound Journals
At regular intervals, unbound serials items are consolidated into bound volumes. After they have been bound, the volumes are shelved in the bound journal collection, also located on the second floor. Bound items may be checked out for three days, with the exception of all nursing journal titles.

The Serials Office is situated at the rear of the second floor, room 245, adjacent to the unbound serials collection. Just follow the "Journal Assistance" signs. Serials staff members are there to assist users in finding material: if the material is not available at MCG, several tools and union list resources are available to help locate it elsewhere. When GIL@MCG lists an item's status as "BINDERY PREP" this item is available in room 247 for use prior to its shipment for binding. If GIL@MCG says "BINDERY RETURN" the Serials Department may still be able to obtain the information for you.

Hours
The Serials Services Office is open Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

For further information, come to the Serials Office, room 245 or call 721-3491.
