A database intervention (DBI) is a process in which data in a production database, such as PeopleSoft, HRMS or Financials is changed outside of the software normally used to enter data. The changed data is not subject to edits or other validation checks, because the DBI process does not use the software and related edits to enter the data. The normal audit trail is also bypassed.
DBIs are necessary when data is entered through the software in the incorrect order, without running appropriate processes, or when an external method for loading, such as through a spreadsheet, is used. These changes, when applied appropriately, correct an error and allow the software to continue to operate correctly.
DBIs applied incorrectly, or without careful analysis, can invalidate data already entered and can cause problems to downstream processes. Undocumented DBIs are an audit issue.
MCG has created a process to ensure that appropriate analysis is done prior to performing DBIs and to provide appropriate audit trails for changes made outside of the software system.
