Wireless: protect before you connect

April 12, 2007

It’s no secret that open, unsecured wireless networks present significant risk to systems that connect to them. Internet prowlers are rampant, scanning networks for passwords, account information and e-mail messages with sensitive or confidential information.

Over the past year, the Information Technology Support and Services staff has been investigating ways to provide a secure wireless network. Soon, one will be available for employees with an MCG NetID. It will be encrypted to keep out prowlers and will ensure that all connected devices have active, up-to-date software installed with Microsoft Windows systems set up to automatically install critical patches.

Only users that require Intranet wireless services, such as Novell NetWare, internal Web pages and services that require VPN access from outside service providers, will be affected.

The existing network will continue to be available, reconfigured to allow access to the external Internet only (MCG Web pages, GroupWise and other applications available from outside sources, such as your home network).
