Setting Up the Proxy Address

Users should configure Automatic proxy detection if available or use the proxy auto configuration script at http://wpad.mcg.edu/wpad.dat. Devices or programs that only support manual proxy (PDAs, FrontPage, etc) need the proxies set to http://proxy.mcg.edu port 8080.

Proxy setting instructions for various browsers are listed below:

Windows

IE (5.5 and 6)

• From the Tools Menu
• Choose "Internet Options"
• Choose "Connections"
• Choose "LAN Settings"
• Check "Automatically detect settings
• Check "Use automatic configuration script"
• Enter Address as: http://wpad.mcg.edu/wpad.dat
• Under "Proxy Server"
• Check "Use a proxy server for your LAN..."
• Enter Address as: proxy.mcg.edu
• Enter Port as: 8080
• Check "Bypass proxy server for local addresses"
• Choose Advanced and enter the Exceptions List
• Click "OK"
• Click "OK"

Firefox and Netscape (8.1.2)

• From the Tools Menu
• Choose "Options"
• In the General section Choose "Connection Settings"
• Choose "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network"
• Click "OK"
• Click "OK"

Macintosh (Mac OS X)

Safari
Proxy Settings in OS X are handled through the system's Network Settings

• From the Apple Menu, select "Location"
• Click "Network Preferences..."
• Click the Proxies tab.
• From the "Configure Proxies:" dropdown menu choose "Using a PAC file"
• Enter the PAC file URL as: http://wpad.mcg.edu/wpad.dat
• Click "Apply Now"
• Close the Network window.

Firefox
Proxy settings can be entered manually or handled through the system's Network Settings

• From the Firefox menu choose "Preferenc..."
• In the Network section under Connection choose "Settings..."
• Choose "Automatic proxy configuration URL:"
•  In the box below enter: http://wpad.mcg.edu/wpad.dat
• Click "OK"
• Click "OK"

Internet Explorer

• From the "Explorer" menu choose "Preferences"
• Click "Proxies" under Network
• Check "Web Proxy:
• Click "Settings"
• Enter Address as: proxy.mcg.edu
• Enter Port as: 8080
• Do NOT check "Use proxy for local servers" 
• Click "OK"
• Check "Use Web Proxy for All"
• Enter the Exceptions List in the box for bypassing the proxies
• Click "OK"

Netscape 7.0

• From "Netscape" menu item choose "Preferences"
• Click + next to (or drop down arrow) "Advanced"
• Choose "Proxies"
• Choose "Automatic proxy configuration URL:"
• Enter http://wpad.mcg.edu/wpad.dat in the box
• Click "OK"

If you are using Virtual PC on the Mac follow the proxy settings instructions for browsers in the Windows environment.

Macintosh (Mac OS 8.x through OS 9.x)

IE (5.x)

• From the Edit Menu
• Choose "Preferenc..."
• Click "Proxies" under Network
• Check "Web Proxy"
• Click "Settings"
• Enter Address as: proxy.mcg.edu
• Enter Port as: 8080
• Leave or set Method as: "Normal"
• Leave User Name and Password blank
• Do NOT check "Use proxy for local servers" 
• Click "OK"
• Check "Use Web Proxy for All"
• Enter the Exceptions List in the box for bypassing the proxies
• Click "OK"

Netscape (4.x and 6.0)

• From the Edit Menu
• Choose "Preferences..."

Netscape 4.x

• Click + next to (or drop down arrow) "Advanced"
• Choose "Proxies"
• Check "Manual proxy configuration"
• Click "Configure" 
• Enter FTP Proxy as: proxy.mcg.edu and Port as: 8080
• Enter the same for HTTP Proxy
• Add the Exceptions List into "No Proxy for"
• Click "OK"
• Click "OK"

Netscape 6.0

• Click + next to (or drop down arrow) "Advanced"
• Choose "Proxies"
• Check "Manual proxy configuration"
• Enter FTP Proxy as: proxy.mcg.edu and Port as: 8080
• Enter the same for HTTP Proxy
• Add the Exceptions List into "No Proxy for"
• Click "OK"

Exceptions or Bypass Proxy Settings List:
Use semicolons to separate entries.
