Upon the initial run of Apple Mail you will be presented with a “Welcome to Mail” wizard to step you thru the process of setting up your mail account.
Fill in the appropriate information.

The second screen in the wizard asks for information for receiving mail.
There are 2 methods for retreiving mail:
POP – downloads the mail to your local computer and optionally deletes the messages from the mail server.
IMAP – the messages reside on the server. IMAP allows you to browse these messages as they reside on the mail server.
Based on the above information, choose your preferred account type from the “Account type” pulldown.
Description is optional.
In both cases use “pop.mcg.edu” as the incoming server.
Type in your MCG NetID for the “User Name”. and your password.
Click “Continue”.

You may get a screen asking you to “Verify Certificate”.
If so, click on the “Show Certificate” button.

Choose “Always Trust” from the “When using this certificate:” pulldown.
Click “Connect”

The third screen asks for information for sending messages.
Description is optional.
Type “smtp.mcg.edu” for the “Outgoing Mail Server”.
Make suer that “Use Authentication” is checked.
The wizard automatically fills in the user name and password information from the previous screen. Do not change the user name and password.
Click “Continue”.
The wizard will pause for several moments while it configures the connection. This is indicated by the spinning dial and the message “Checking connection to mail server smtp.mcg.edu”.
Be patient while this necessary process completes.

The final screen shows you an “Account Summary”
Click “Create”.
Next the program will begin downloading your messages from the server.

There is one additional setting that should be adusted for future emails to download successfully.
Please open Mail preferences from the “Mail” menu in the upper left corner of the screen.

Click on “Accounts” and the click on the account that represents your mcg email account. (POP or IMAP)
Click on the “Advanced” tab.
Type in “6000” in the area that says “Prompt me to skip messages over ____ KB.”
This will prevent errors when receiving large attachments. If you have an attachment over 6000KB please use Email Webaccess to download the attachment.
Close the window using the red circle in the upper left corner.

When asked to save changes click on “Save”.
