Find computer's IP address

The Internet Protocol (IP) address is a number used to identify your computer on the Internet. It is a unique number having up to 12 digits with every three digits separated by a period. The general format for an IP address is: 123.123.123.123

For Windows XP and Windows 2000

  • Under the Start button, select Run
  • Type "CMD" and click OK
  • Type "ipconfig" and press Enter

  • Your IP address will be displayed

After obtaining your IP address you can close the window by clicking the "X" in the upper right corner of the screen.

For Windows 95 and 98Computers

  • A summary of address information about the computer can be accessed by running another win95 utility.
  • Under the Start button, select Run.
  • Enter "winipcfg" and click OK

  • The following will appear
  • An "IP Configuration" window displays.  
    Click the "More Info" button to display address info.
  • The information can be saved by clicking the question mark in the upper-left corner of the window and selecting copy (or control-C keystroke). 
      
    If you don't copy or paste any other data, the summary info is stored on the windows clipboard. So it can be pasted into a new text document and saved.

For Macintosh OS 9.x or below

  • Click on the Apple in the top left hand corner
  • Go to Control Panels>TCP/IP

For Macintosh OS X

  • Click on the Apple in the top left hand corner
  • Go to Location>Network Preferences...
  • Click on the TCP/IP Tab
