Taking the Initiative - It's Up to You

As a member of the MCG campus community, you are an important part of the Identity Protection Initiative. You can make a real and lasting difference in the security of the personal information stored on this campus – and you may only have to make some simple changes in the way you work to do so.

Look around your office and consider what information vulnerabilities may be present:

  • Do you or anyone in your office keep a “shadow system” spreadsheet or database of Social Security or credit card numbers on a personal computer? Is it password protected? Encrypted?
  • Are copies of forms and reports kept in a secure location?  Are SSN or other ID numbers listed on the labels of file folders?
  • Are papers containing personal information disposed of properly so they cannot be “harvested” by others?
  • Are computers/computer screens where SSN and other ID numbers used logged out when unattended?
  • Do you or anyone in your office include SSN/other IDs in instant or email messages? (these may be unsecure)
  • Do faculty members properly dispose of tests and student papers requiring a SSN or other ID number?
  • Does your office voice message ask callers to leave a SSN or other ID number when leaving a message?
  • Do you know of any other potential vulnerabilities in your office that need to be examined?

Safeguard the personal information of your colleagues and MCG's students with the same vigilance you use when protecting your own.  If you would like a poster to display in your department, please contact Janet Hopkins or you may print one here IPI Poster.  The posters are designed to serve as reminders of those small acts that can make a big difference.  Please put them on permanent display in key, high-traffic areas throughout your department - in work and break rooms, over copiers, in file and storage areas, etc.

Please let us know if you have suggestions or comments about the initiative or MCG practices and/or vulnerabilities related to the collection and use of personal information.

Thank you for your interest and input. Complete optional fields only if you want a response.
