Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics (IMMAG) at nightHistory

Founded in 1993, the mission of the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics (IMMAG) is to promote research excellence in the basic biomedical and clinical sciences at MCG. Today, IMMAG consists of 21 academic track faculty, 12 research track faculty and 37 joint faculty from other basic science and clinical departments and centers at MCG. Open doors and interdisciplinary collaboration are at the heart of IMMAG research.

Currently, it has three programmatic research areas: Nanomedicine & Gene Regulation, Developmental Neurobiology, and Regenerative Medicine. Each program is led by a world-renowned scientist (Drs. William Dynan, Darrell Brann, and Carlos Isales, respectively). Two other successful programs at MCG also had their origin in IMMAG - the Immunotherapy Center and the Center for Molecular Chaperone Radiobiology and Cancer Virology, which evolved into separate independent functioning units in FY2006 and FY2007 respectively.

In January 2009, Dr. Lin Mei, an internationally known and honored neuroscientist, assumed the Directorship of IMMAG. Prior to Dr. Mei’s appointment, IMMAG was led by its founding director, Dr. Howard Rasmussen from 1993-2000, followed by Dr. Robert K. Yu, who led IMMAG from 2000-2009. Many IMMAG faculty are based in the $21 million Interdisciplinary Research Building on Laney-Walker Boulevard, in the Sanders Research and Education Building adjacent to the Interdisciplinary Research Building or in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center adjacent to the MCG Medical Center. Phase II of the Interdisciplinary Research Building opened in spring, 2004, and houses biotechnology incubator space, laboratory animals, and other basic science laboratories.
