Research Emphasis:
The major goal of my laboratory is to define the cellular signaling mechanisms that regulate gastric
acid secretion by the parietal cell. Acid secretion by this cell type is a major factor in the
development of peptic ulcer disease. Our laboratory has developed the first primary cell culture
model for such studies. Using this and other cellular models, we have recently identified and cloned
three previously unknown signaling proteins that are controlled by independent pathways within the
parietal cell and other secretory epithelial cells within the GI tract, lung and kidney. At least
two of these proteins are overexpressed in multiple epithelial cancers. We are presently employing a
range of molecular, cellular and biochemical techniques to define the cellular localization and to
identify other interacting proteins in order to determine the specific functions of these novel
proteins.
