Erhard Bieberich was born in Cologne, Germany. In 1986, he received his M.S. in biology and biochemistry at the University of Cologne. His M.S. work was on the synthesis and characterization of highly specific inhibitors for β-glucosidases in glycolipid metablolism. His work fostered numerous studies at the University of California using these inhibitors to determine the glycolipid metabolism in skin. In 1990, he received his Ph.D. (summa cum laude) for his thesis work on the biosynthesis and post-translational modification of lysosomal β-glucosidase, an enzyme deficient in Gaucher disease. From 1990-1996 during his post-doc time at the University of Bonn, he cloned and characterized for the first time several enzymes in N-glycoprotein processing. He continued his work on N-glycoproteins and glycolipids when he joined Dr. Robert K. Yu's laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1996. He determined the functional role of N-glycosylation for the processing of sialyltransferases in glycolipid biosynthesis. In 2000, he joined the Medical College of Georgia and developed his own projects on ceramide-dependent cell signaling in cancer and stem cells. These studies are funded by NIH (first as R03, now R01) and have been published in renowned journals. CURRICULUM VITAE Erhard Bieberich, PhD EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL (see also
