Mentors & Advisors Group

The Life Sciences Business Development Center (“LSBDC”) at the Medical College of Georgia (“MCG”) in Augusta was created in 2004 to assist new businesses in the life sciences area. It is one of the newest high-tech business incubators in the southeast. With 5 entrepreneurial suites (each of which consists of a large wet lab, a cleanroom, and 2 offices - all fully outfitted with basic furnishings and equipment), it can accommodate virtually any bio-business. Companies with a focus on anything from bioinformatics and diagnostics to devices and pharmaceuticals will be comfortable in the LSBDC in MCG’s newest research building in the center of campus.

A critical element in the plan to assist young companies that are resident in the LSBDC is the Mentors & Advisors Group (“MAG”). This is a pool of approximately 20 people expert in one or mare aspects of business development. Members include entrepreneurs, bankers, accountants, lawyers, biotechnologists, marketing and manufacturing specialists, regulatory affairs experts, and the like.

Each LSBDC resident company that needs help with business plans, fundraising, and business development in general is expected to participate in the counseling program as a condition of occupancy in the incubator. This is to ensure that the company has a solid plan and the ability to deliver on its potential. Company leadership will work closely with its group (most often about 5 people) of Advisors, specifically selected to satisfy its needs. One of the group of Advisors will be selected to serve as the company Mentor. He/she will work closely with the entrepreneur and will meet weekly to deal with issues and challenges. The entire Advisory Group will help establish critical goals and measurable along the pathway to market success. They will meet monthly with the company, at which time the company’s progress in meeting milestones will be reviewed. Mid-course corrections and new implementation plans will arise as needed during the lifetime of the company.

The Mentors & Advisors Group members serve as volunteers in this important task. The LSBDC welcomes participation from experienced businesspersons, especially those with a familiarity with the life sciences industry and entrepreneurship.
