Annual Training 2008

(All requirements must be completed

by December 1, 2008)

Topic of the Month
The Training and Education Department understands that many employees are unable to attend training classes due to departmental staffing needs.  In an effort to share the wealth of knowledge with all campus employees, we have created the topic of the month training slide show presentation.  Please view the presentation and complete an evaluation on the presentation and fax the evaluation to 1-0160 to receive a certificate and .05 continuing education units (CEUs).  Questions or comments can be emailed to Catherine Holmes, Senior Training Specialist.

Training and Education
The Training and Education section provides quality training programs and activities centered on improving organizational and individual performance. All training sessions are conducted in the MCG Annex Training Room 1151, unless otherwise specified.

  • Designs, develops and delivers programs that effectively contribute to the overall mission of the Medical College of Georgia. Offers a current schedule of course offerings based on training requests and training assessments. Updates course descriptions and course offerings. Customizes training to meet your departmental needs. Maintain records of departmental training requests and class rosters. Records are available to participants and their supervisors upon request.
  • Manages the Campus Mediation Program, Employee Discount Program, State Charitable Contributions Program, receives campus Performance Appraisals, and the Tuition Assistance Program.

Training and Education Registration Guidelines:

  • Class sizes are limited (24 people lecture style and 15 people for computer courses) and are filled on a first-come basis. Complete and submit one registration form for each class. Please register at least one to two weeks prior to the scheduled training date for all training classes.
  • Those whose registration forms are received after a class is filled are automatically put on a waiting list. Waiting list registrants are notified of vacancies and moved into the classes as cancellations are received.

Customized Training
Training and Education can assist departments in meeting specific training needs for their faculty and staff. We will provide resources or coordinate customized training sessions upon request. For more information, please contact Training and Education at 1-3196.

Room Reservations
If you are interested in utilizing the HR Training Room (HS 1151) for a departmental meeting or training session during normal work hours (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.), please contact the Joel Smith, Employee Services Coordinator at 1-0343 two weeks prior to the event.  The training room houses 15 computer workstations and can seat 24 people in a lecture setting.

Cancellation Policy
If you are unable to attend a class that you have registered for, please contact Training and Education at 1-3196, at least three days prior to the class start date.  If a participant is unable to attend a paid course, the department may send someone else in their place (written confirmation will be necessary). The registration fee is non-refundable, unless the Training and Education office cancels the class due to low enrollment.

Fees
There are no course fees for MCG classified employees unless otherwise indicated. There are several computer courses that have a fee. These courses are limited to a selected number of participants (check each class for class size). An employee may register for a class; however, he or she is not confirmed to attend the class until the Training and Education office receives payment.

Alternative Dispute Resolution
Mediation is a voluntary, informal, structured process in which an impartial third party, called a mediator, helps disputing parties to generate and evaluate options of reaching a mutually acceptable agreement.  A mediator does not have the power to impose an agreement on the parties.  Mediation is strictly voluntary and all contents and subsequent outcomes are confidential.  Please review the Informal Mediation Program policy or contact the Assistant Director for Employee Relations, Training and Education, at 1-6197.

State Charitable Contributions Program
In 1982, the Georgia General Assembly established the annual program to enable state employees a convenient means to contribute to participating charitable organizations through payroll deductions. Employees can make unrestricted donations or contribute to a specific organization. Independent and federated charities supported by the campaign provide health, welfare and educational programs to individuals across Georgia. For more information please visit the
State Charitable Contribution Program web page or contact the MCG Campaign Coordinator, Joel Smith, at 1-0343.

Tuition Assistance Program
The Board of Regents and the Medical College of Georgia are committed to helping its full-time employees pursue growth and development. The Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is designed to promote professional growth and development of full-time employees of the Medical College. Tuition assistance is the waiver of tuition and certain fees for employees enrolled in courses on the Medical College of Georgia campus and at other University System of Georgia (USG) institutions. This program is available to full-time (100% work commitment) employees who have completed six continuous months of regular employment and are working towards a degree at one of the 35 participating USG institutions. Such eligibility must exist by the application deadline. This program waives the cost of up to eight (8) hours of tuition and fees per semester. USG distance learning and web-based courses are eligible.

TAP participants may enroll in distance learning and web-based courses offered by the University System of Georgia. If the tuition for these courses is greater than the System-approved normal tuition amount, USG institutions may elect to waive only that portion of the tuition that does not exceed the System-approved normal tuition amount. An employee will be responsible for paying the remainder of the tuition cost.
