Description: The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Professor and Chair, Department of Pathology. The Search Committee seeks candidates with highly developed leadership skills, collaborative communication and interpersonal skills, and an outstanding record of academic achievement in education, research, and service programs of the Department of Pathology. The successful candidate will possess the ability to define, articulate, and implement a vision and strategic direction for the department, and to contribute to the overall strategic direction of the MCG School of Medicine and its hospital system partner, MCGHealth.
Requirements: Candidates must hold the degree of MD or MD/PhD and have academic credentials commensurate with appointment at the rank of full professor; s/he must be board certified in anatomic and/or clinical pathology and eligible to obtain a license to practice medicine in the State of Georgia. Demonstrated leadership in academic medicine and pathology at the university level is required, as is a successful record of interdisciplinary collaboration, team leadership, strategic planning, and resource development and management. Demonstrated excellence in the missions of education, research, and clinical care with an understanding of mission interdependencies is vital. Essential attributes include a keen appreciation of institutional and departmental needs, and the professional and personal skills to achieve balance; and an understanding of the interdependent and collaborative relationship between schools of medicine and health systems. A strong record of extramural research funding is desirable.
The Department of Pathology is well positioned for a new leader. The department currently has 11 full time faculty, 5 part time faculty appointments, and 15 residents and fellows. The School of Medicine is the founding school of the Medical College of Georgia and is the state’s only public medical school. The School of Medicine is presently leading expansion of medical education in the State of Georgia with newly-established clinical campuses in Albany and Savannah, and a developing four-year campus in Athens that will seat its inaugural class in 2010. MCG has a long tradition of excellence in education and clinical care and is one of four research-intensive universities of the University System of Georgia. It is comprised of schools of Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Studies, Medicine, and Nursing and is the sole academic institution in the State dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.
