General Information
The overarching mission of the Department of Biostatistics at MCG is to advance knowledge in the field of biostatistics, and in the biological, biomedical and behavioral sciences through collaborative research. The mission is achieved by:

1.            Implementing a high caliber teaching program in biostatistics for graduate students and others;

2.            Conducting original research to develop and evaluate biostatistical methodologies;

3.            Conducting original biomedical research using statistical methodology; and

4.            Collaborating with investigators on biomedical research that requires biostatistics support.

The Department supports the research mission of MCG by being actively involved in methodological research and by providing collaborative research support in biostatistics, including research planning, study design, data analysis and interpretation of results. Statistical support is provided throughout all phases of internal and external grant proposal preparations, from clarifying specific aims and hypotheses, examining design alternatives, suggesting appropriate analysis alternatives, and providing power and sample size estimation. The Biostatistics faculty members have extensive experience in providing statistical support for NIH, NSF and private foundation grants. They collaborate with other principal investigators by serving as co-investigators in the grant preparation process and funded projects.

Statistical support is also provided to faculty, fellows, residents and external investigators through the Biostatistics Consulting Center on a fee basis. Specific services offered include assistance in grant proposal preparation, design of clinical trials, experimental design, survey design, determination of sample size requirements, randomization, data management, statistical modeling, data analysis and interpretation. The MCG investigators receive a 50% discount on all consulting projects.

The department is also a teaching arm of MCG, and is involved in developing and teaching biostatistics courses for various graduate programs. A Masters program in Biostatistics is slated to start in the Fall of 2006. The faculty members are also actively involved in the College-wide training programs for fellows, residents, graduate students and professional students. The faculty members serve on the Masters and Doctoral committees, mentor fellows, residents, graduate students and professional students, and provide biostatistical and computing support on their research projects. The faculty members also participate in journal clubs of various departments on campus, as circumstances necessitate.

Specific Statistical Services
  • General Consulting
  • Journal Club Participation
  • Grant Preparation
  • Sample Size Determination
  • Power Determination
  • General Statistical Analysis
  • Study Design
  • Hypothesis Clarification

What We Do Not Do

  • Data Collection
  • Questionnaire Development
  • Data Entry
  • Database Management
When Should You Call Us for Help?
The best time to call us is when you are starting to formulate your hypothesis and idea.  We can help you decide what is the most appropriate method for study design, create a testable hypothesis, determine how many subjects you will need to gather data on, and how your data should be entered so that they can be easily analyzed.

Statistical Consultancy Service
The Office has set up a service to deal with queries and technical questions. For details of how to make an appointment, access the website.

Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development
Director: Dr. Mike Gabridge

This office handles a variety of tasks related to faculty inventions and patents.  It processes Invention Disclosures, files for patent protection, markets MCG technologies, arranges licenses, and handles royalty income.  Faculty members wanting to share reagents outside the university will need a Materials Transfer Agreement from this office, and if they share confidential information to outsiders, they will need a Confidential Disclosure Agreement.  They also oversee the Core Laboratories, and manage the new business incubator.

 Faculty and staff who thing they have unique inventions that might become a patent, or anyone who wants to consider establishing a new bio-company, should contact them so that everyone’s rights can be properly protected.

In addition, students attend workshops, discussion groups and laboratory demonstrations that expose them to a broad range of biomedical research techniques, approaches and laboratory experiences. Students are awarded a stipend for their participation in the program.

Academic Year STAR: The academic year STAR program is designed to provide research experience for undergraduate students during the academic year while enrolled in Augusta State University or Paine College. Students can receive academic credit from their home institution for participation in the program.
