Laboratories handling biohazardous materials are unique environments
that may pose infectious disease risks to persons in them. The
knowledge, techniques, and equipment needed to prevent most
laboratory-acquired infections are readily available. The goal of
the biological safety program is to protect faculty, staff,
employees, students and the environment from exposure to
biohazardous agents, as well as the protection of experimental
materials. The Biological Safety Office provides the following
services:
-
information and advice concerning the safe handling, containment,
and disposal of biological agents
-
monitors compliance
with local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines that
affect biomedical research
-
provides training to
and assists principal investigators, faculty, staff, and employees
with questions relating to biological safety
-
laboratory and research
area biosafety audits
-
develop / review
policies and procedures
-
review / approval of research grant applications for use of
biohazards and toxic or hazardous chemicals

The Chemical Management Program is designed to manage chemicals and
hazardous wastes in accordance with State and federal regulations.
Also, safety color codes for marking physical hazards,
specifications for accident prevention, signs and tags, personal
protective equipment, and process safety management of highly
hazardous chemicals are required under State and federal
regulations. Chemical storage areas, laboratories, and containers
are marked in a manner that will alert employees when they are
entering an area where hazardous materials are used or stored. In
order to accomplish the above, the Environmental Health and
Occupational Safety Office provides the following services:
-
chemical spill response and clean up
-
chemical area
placarding
-
laboratory safety
auditing
-
chemical inventory of
all laboratories and chemical storage facilities
-
chemical safety standard operating procedures maintenance
-
maintenance of
computerized chemical listing containing DOT and waste hazard
classifications and other chemical hazard information
-
hazardous waste
tracking
-
hazardous waste
disposal record maintenance
-
chemical exchange,
waste collection, and disposal
For more information on
Chemical Safety.
The Right to Know Program is designed to provide employee protection
and to comply with State regulations to inform employees of the
possible hazards associated with chemicals with which they work. It
acts as a resource to provide information about chemicals or
commercial products employees handle or to which they are exposed.
It also provides information and support for personal protection. In
order to accomplish the above, the Right to Know Office provides the
following services:
-
coordinate chemical safety management for MCG
-
employee / student
orientation and training in all hazardous materials
-
consumer product safety
information
-
area evaluation / risk
assessment
-
