The Medical College of Georgia Environmental Health and Safety Division (EH&S) provides safety services to staff, patients, students and visitors. The six sections of EH&S are Administration, Biological Safety, Chemical Safety, Environmental Health & Occupational Safety (EHOS), Fire Safety, and Radiation Safety. As a part of your process of getting to know the Medical College, the following are the important issues related to EH&S that you will need to know.

Biological Safety

Laboratories handling biohazardous materials are unique environments that may pose infectious disease risks to persons in them. The knowledge, techniques, and equipment needed to prevent most laboratory-acquired infections are readily available. The goal of the biological safety program is to protect faculty, staff, employees, students and the environment from exposure to biohazardous agents, as well as the protection of experimental materials. The Biological Safety Office provides the following services:

  1. information and advice concerning the safe handling, containment, and disposal of biological agents
  2. monitors compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines that affect biomedical research
  3. provides training to and assists principal investigators, faculty, staff, and employees with questions relating to biological safety
  4. laboratory and research area biosafety audits
  5. develop / review policies and procedures
  6. review / approval of research grant applications for use of biohazards and toxic or hazardous chemicals

Chemical Safety & Right-To-Know

The Chemical Management Program is designed to manage chemicals and hazardous wastes in accordance with State and federal regulations. Also, safety color codes for marking physical hazards, specifications for accident prevention, signs and tags, personal protective equipment, and process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals are required under State and federal regulations. Chemical storage areas, laboratories, and containers are marked in a manner that will alert employees when they are entering an area where hazardous materials are used or stored. In order to accomplish the above, the Environmental Health and Occupational Safety Office provides the following services:

  1. chemical spill response and clean up
  2. chemical area placarding
  3. laboratory safety auditing
  4. chemical inventory of all laboratories and chemical storage facilities
  5. chemical safety standard operating procedures maintenance
  6. maintenance of computerized chemical listing containing DOT and waste hazard classifications and other chemical hazard information
  7. hazardous waste tracking                                              
  8. hazardous waste disposal record maintenance
  9. chemical exchange, waste collection, and disposal

The Right to Know Program is designed to provide employee protection and to comply with State regulations to inform employees of the possible hazards associated with chemicals with which they work. It acts as a resource to provide information about chemicals or commercial products employees handle or to which they are exposed. It also provides information and support for personal protection. In order to accomplish the above, the Right to Know Office provides the following services:
  1. coordinate chemical safety management for MCG
  2. employee / student orientation and training in all hazardous materials
  3. consumer product safety information
  4. area evaluation / risk assessment
  5. Material Safety Data Sheets and labeling system
  6. preliminary resolution on employees’ chemical safety problems

The purpose of the Environmental and Occupational Safety Program is to provide professional and technical expertise to the Medical College of Georgia in the areas of industrial hygiene, toxicology, and risk assessment. The program is designed to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control hazards arising in the workplace that may affect the health of faculty, staff, students, and employees. In order to accomplish this, the following services are provided:
  1. indoor environmental monitoring, sampling, and analysis to include noise and sound level monitoring, air sampling, and ventilation surveys
  2. evaluation of ergonomic hazards and health stressors found in the work place and determination of the potential health effects resulting from exposure to those hazards
  3. personal protective equipment review and assistance
  4. safety shower and eyewash unit inspection
  5. laboratory fumehood and biosafety cabinet inspection/certification
  6. responding to concerns or complaints dealing with indoor environmental conditions
  7. worker education dealing with protecting themselves, others, and the environment from health and environmental stressors

Fire Safety

The Fire Safety Program is responsible for coordinating and reporting on all campus activities associated with fire and life safety for the Medical College of Georgia. Established in 1973, the section specializes in fire safety, accident / injury report systems, fire safety education, and provides expertise in the areas of NFPA codes. The program includes:

  1. fire code compliance                                                     
  2. fire and accident prevention
  3. building inspections and hazard surveillance
  4. new employee and annual staff training
  5. accident / injury report review, trending and statistical reporting
  6. fire drill management
  7. fire alarm, sprinkler and automatic extinguishment system management
  8. fire equipment, extinguishers, and hoses
  9. construction / renovation plan review
  10. ILSM systems (Interim Life Safety Measures)
  11. outside agency liaison in areas of fire safety

Radiation Safety

The Radiation Safety Program is designed to ensure the safe use of radioactive material within the clinical and research programs and to ensure compliance with State and federal regulations governing their use. It acts as a resource to assist clinicians and researchers in their use of radioactive material and in their efforts to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. In order to accomplish the above, the Radiation Safety Office provides the following services:

  1. laboratory and clinic surveys
  2. instrument calibration
  3. radioactive waste disposal
  4. radioactive spill management and support
  5. personnel dosimetry
  6. radiation safety training
  7. radioactive source inventory
  8. bioassays
  9. radiopharmaceutical administration support
  10. brachytherapy support
  11. review of applications for radioactive material use
  12. laboratory approval and clearance
  13. shielding analysis
  14. x-ray machine surveys
  15. consultative services
