Rank: Instructor

Description: Tenure Track is established at the time of initial appointment. Significant performance is expected in all three areas of academic appointment: Teaching, Research/Scholarly Achievement and Service. Outstanding performance is expected in at least two areas that must include research/scholarly achievement.

Full-time or part-time.

Description: Non-tenure track is usually established at the time of initial appointment. Outstanding performance is expected in specific areas of job assignment. Research/scholarly achievement and professional development associated with patient care and teaching are encouraged. Career progress may include appointment to a tenure track position.

Full-time or part-time.

Track: Non-tenure
Description: The research scientist track is established at the time of initial appointment. Outstanding performance is expected in the specific areas of job assignment. Persons appointed as research scientists usually do not conduct independent research. Teaching related to research is encouraged.

Full-time or part-time.

(1) The Medical College of Georgia will annually prepare and submit, to the Chancellor, a list of positions designated as tenure and non-tenure track positions. Person recruited to tenure track positions will have a tenure track appointment. Persons recruited to a non-tenure track position will have a non-tenure track appointment. BR 803.10

(2) Positions designated as non-tenure track positions or as tenure track positions may be converted to the other type only with approval by the Chancellor. Requests for position designation or for conversion during the budget year will also be submitted to the Chancellor for approval. BR 803.10

(3) Non-tenure track positions may be established for full-time professional personnel assigned specific functions in highly technical or specialized research or clinical programs.


Promotion Criteria

Time In Rank:

  • Assistant Professor: at least three years of full time academic experience at the Instructor level or non-teaching post-doctoral experience.
  • Associate Professor: at least four years of full time academic experience at the Assistant Professor level or equivalent. Doctorate or equivalent in training or experience is expected.
  • Professor: at least five years of full time academic experience at the Associate Professor level or equivalent. Doctorate or its equivalent in training and experience required.

Teaching Effectiveness:

  • Professional Growth and Development as a Teacher: advanced degree obtained since appointment, publication of textbooks, chapters, review papers, position paper, editorials, appointment to state, regional, or national board, member of accreditation teams.
  • Teaching Load: number of courses, level of responsibility, number and level of students taught.
  • Teaching Effectiveness: teaching awards, performance of students on external exams, use of protocols by other institutions.

Research/Scholarly Achievements

  • Publication: refereed journals, review articles, textbooks, chapters
  • Seniority of Authorship
  • Grant Support: type, level and extent
  • Professional Growth and Development: appointment to review panels, editorial boards, site visit teams, consultantships

Service to Public and Institution
To Public:

  • Health Care Delivery
  • Disease Prevention
  • Health Promotion and Education
  • Quality of Service: level of activity (number and type of patients served; number of students, house officers, and fellows supervised)
  • Professional Growth and Development: certifications, licensures, boards, and citations of merit, extramural consultantships germane to public service

To Institution:

Competence in all three areas with outstanding achievement in two out of three areas, one being research/scholarly achievement.

Promotion to:

  • Assistant Professor: satisfactory performance of all academic duties, potential for further professional development. Recognized locally as expert in field.
  • Associate Professor: sustained record of professional achievement. Achieve regional recognition for accomplishments in field.
  • Professor: accepted and recognized nationally or internationally for distinction and excellence in their professional achievements.

Tenure
Tenure carries with it the expectation that the institution shall continue to need the services that the faculty member is capable of performing and that the financial resources are expected to be available for continued employment. Tenure also carries the expectation that the faculty member will improve or continue upon the level of attainment which characterized the qualifications for the original award of tenure.

Faculty recognition and reward through tenure shall be based upon each faculty member's sustained contribution in the areas of teaching, research/scholarly activity, and service to the defined mission and purpose of the Medical College of Georgia.

Tenure Eligibility

  • All persons with full-time faculty appointments at MCG who hold a regular rank in a tenure-track of Assistant Professor or above.
  • Tenure-eligible faculty may be reviewed for tenure alone or for both promotion or tenure simultaneously. Failure to receive one does not preclude a decision to award the other.
  • Acceptance of an administrative position at MCG does not influence tenure status.

Probationary Periods

  • Minimum probationary period is five years of full time service at the rank of Assistant Professor or above.
  • A maximum of three years' credit toward the minimum probationary period may be allowed for service in tenure track professional positions at other institutions or for full-time service at the rank of Instructor.
  • A maximum of seven years is allowed at the rank of Assistant Professor or above without the award of tenure. A maximal time which may be served in a combination of full-time instructional appointments (Lecturer, Instructor, Assistant Professor) without the award of tenure is 10 years.
