Faculty Orientation for Computer Mediated Instruction (CMI)

CMI is a term used to identify a variety of systems that allow instructors and students to communicate with one another via computers.

At the Medical College of Georgia, we use WebCT as our primary course delivery system. It is the industry leader in course management tools and the standard for the University Systems of Georgia.

Over 300 courses are housed on our WebCT server. Most of the courses are what we call distributed education. This is the combining of online instructional technology and face-to-face courses.

The fastest growing segment of our course deliver is now distance education. This is the teaching and learning that occurs primarily in an online environment. Students on distance campuses and students on the main campus are taking fully online courses.

Research indicates that the use of interactive computer-mediated instructional technology in the classroom significantly enhances student learning by increasing student performance as well as faculty productivity.
