Responsibilities of the Section Chief include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides leadership, management and motivation to the Section
  • Directs clinical activities of the Section
  • Directs instructional/educational activities of the Section
  • Promotes research interest among the faculty
  • Directs the specialty training programs for residents and fellows
  • Recruits faculty for recommendations to the Chairman when positions are available
  • Knowledgeable of all MCG policies and procedures applicable to the Department
  • Conducts regularly scheduled meetings
  • Responsible for disseminating information to faculty and staff in the Section
  • Encourages faculty participation in Section and Department activities
  • Exercises fiscal responsibility in the day-to-day activities of the Section
  • Routinely reviews budgets, expenditures, professional charges, receipts and Section activities

The recommendation of a Section Chief of an official section within an academic department at the Medical College of Georgia must be recommended through the Faculty Action and Approval Process (FAAP).

August 28, 1987 - Origination date of General Section Chief Job Description - School of Medicine Dean's Office.

September 3, 1987 - Vice President for Business and Finance forwarded the necessary information to the Board of Regents to establish a new Job Classification Code (BCode) for Section Chief.

March 20, 2003 – Provost approved the recommendation by the Dean of the School of Medicine to change the institutional guidelines “Procedures to Establish Official Sections within an Existing School of Medicine Clinical Academic Unit.”
