The Board of RegentsSource: The Policy Manual: Board of Regents, University System of Georgia, Section 100-Authorization Constitutional Provisions 1982 The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia shall consist of one member from each congressional district in the state and five additional members from the state at large, appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate... The government, control and management of the University System of Georgia and all of the institutions in said system shall be vested in the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Powers: The Board of Regents shall have power: (1) to make such reasonable rules and regulations as are necessary for the performance of its duties; (2) to elect or appoint professors, educators, stewards or any other officers necessary for all of the schools in the University System, as may be authorized by the General Assembly, to discontinue or remove them as the good of the system or any of its schools or institutions may require, and to fix their compensations; (3) to establish all such schools of learning or art as may be useful to the state, and to organize the same in the way most likely to attain the ends desired; (4) to exercise any power usually granted to such corporation, necessary to its usefulness, which is not in conflict with the constitution and laws of this state. The Board of Regents shall have such other and further powers and duties as may now or hereafter be provided by law or the state constitution. Access to Academic Excellence for the New Millennium: As Georgia emerges as a leader in a global society, the University System of Georgia will lead in access to academic excellence. Among the nation's public universities and colleges, Georgia's will be recognized for first-rate undergraduate education, leading-edge research, and committed public service. Georgians will appreciate the System's prestige and leadership in public higher education, including its graduate and professional programs, as fundamental to the state's economic, social, technological, and cultural advancement. The University System of Georgia and its component colleges and universities will sustain close contact with the people of Georgia, be responsive to the needs of Georgians first and foremost while raising their aspirations, and generate a more highly educated populace throughout the state. It will seek to create for students from various backgrounds every possible avenue to intellectual achievement without compromising academic excellence, and challenge them to their full potential for leadership. Its students, who are its heart and soul, will therefore be its strongest supporters. To these ends, the University System of Georgia will be characterized by:
The University System of Georgia will hold itself accountable to the citizens of Georgia for the effective and efficient use of every available material resource, new technology, and human insight and activity to achieve access to academic excellence for all citizens, and to charge its collective intellectual power on behalf of the state |
