The Chairs of standing committees shall be appointed from the
elected membership of the Council and shall assume office July 1, subject to the approval
of the Council. Chairs of standing committees shall not hold comparable positions in their
respective faculty committees. The chair of each standing committee may serve for two
consecutive terms.
All faculty members* of the General Faculty Assembly are eligible
to serve on the standing committees of the Academic Council. Annually, vacancies will be
filled from volunteers solicited by the respective standing committee chairs. These will
usually be selected from the results of a request for volunteers which the
Secretary-Treasurer of the Academic Council mails to all faculty members. Other faculty
members may be selected in order to fulfill the functions of the committee.
The chair of each standing committee shall submit a list of those
nominees who agree to serve to the Secretary prior to the September meeting of the
Academic Council.
The President may appoint an administrative officer within the
area of activity of each committee as an ex-officio member of that committee. Students,
housestaff and alumni may be invited by the Executive Committee to serve on appropriate
committees. Except for ex-officio members, appointment to any committee shall be three years,
unless otherwise noted,
and no member shall serve more than two consecutive terms.
When a vacancy occurs for a committee chair or committee member
who is unable to complete his/her term of service, the replacement's term shall be
considered to have begun on July 1 of the current year if the appointment comes on or
before December 31, on July 1 of the following year if it comes after December 31. Such
replacements shall be appointed in the same manner as other standing committee chairs and
members with the exception that a report of their appointment shall be made to the
Academic Council for its approval at its meeting immediately subsequent to the action of
the Executive Committee.
