Executive Committee of the Academic Council
Medical College of Georgia
The faculty of the Medical College of Georgia has responsibilities related to students, accreditation, and their own governance which are handled by the Executive Committee of the Academic Council, the Academic Council, and the General Faculty Assembly. Minutes of all meetings are to be forwarded to the Chancellor in accordance with Bylaws of the Board of Regents.
General Faculty Assembly
All full time members of the Corps of Instruction and designated Administrative Officers as specified in the Statutes are members of the General Faculty Assembly. The General Faculty Assembly meets at least twice a year during both fall and winter quarters as specified in the Statutes.
The President of the Medical College of Georgia serves as the ex-officio Chair and presiding officer of the General Faculty Assembly. Other officers are elected from and by the membership as specified in the Statutes.
Academic Council
Representatives are elected by and from each school and the Library to serve as members of the Academic Council. One representative is elected for each twenty members of the full time faculty as specified by the Statutes. Designated administrative officers also serve as ex-officio members of the Academic Council. The Academic Council meets at least quarterly as specified in the Statutes.
The officers of the Academic Council are the same as the officers of the General Faculty Assembly. The Academic Council, on behalf of the General Faculty Assembly, concerns itself with University issues related to students, faculty governance, and policies and procedures for which faculty input or approval is requested or required.
The duties of the Academic Council are performed by committees and task forces. Committees exist when regular monitoring or review is desired, representation from each school and the Library is essential, and when it appears that the faculty’s best interests can be served by an on- going group of informed persons. Task forces exist when issues need development and summation or when activity is expected to be sporadic. The Academic Council has two kinds of committees: an Executive Committee and Standing Committees. Subcommittees or Task Forces may be appointed by the Executive Committee with approval by the Academic Council.
Executive Committee of the Academic Council
The Executive Committee is composed of the officers of the Academic Council, the Past Chair of the Executive Committee, one representative from each school and the library, standing committee chairs and the President, ex-officio. The school and library representatives serve as liaisons between the individual school faculty organizations and the university faculty organization. The Vice-Chair of the Academic Council serves as Chair of the Executive Committee, and the Vice Chair-elect of the Academic Council serves as Chair-elect.
The Executive Committee handles the business of the Academic Council and the General Faculty Assembly, subject to their approval, on a day to day basis. It appoints the Chairs of the Standing Committees, and the Chairs of Task Forces. It appoints faculty members to serve on task forces and/or standing committees, or subcommittees. Annually, a list of faculty with knowledge, skills or interest to serve on task forces that may be needed during the year is created and maintained. The Executive Committee meets at least six times a year.
Standing Committee and Subcommittees
There are three standing committees of the Academic Council. These committees have custody of the following areas of interest which may be addressed by subcommittees, task forces or by individuals. Members of the Grievance subcommittee, the Statutes subcommittee and the Nominations subcommittee are elected by the members of the Faculty Assembly. (also FAPT, Eval. of Admin.). These subcommittees choose their chairs from their membership. The selected chairs also serve as members of their respective parent committees. Other subcommittees and task forces are appointed by the Executive Committee. The chairs also serve as members of their parent committees.
