Interests:

Clinically, Dr. Ambati’s practice consists of patients with complex corneal and anterior segment pathology, those interested in laser vision correction or refractive surgery, and general ophthalmic issues.  He performs cornea transplants, LASIK, cataract extraction, and other procedures of the anterior segment of the eye.

Additionally, Dr. Ambati devotes a significant portion of his time to research endeavors investigating the molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels, in the cornea.  He has demonstrated that the molecule angiostatin, a fragment of the blood protein plasminogen, can both inhibit and regress corneal neovascularization, the first demonstration of regression of established neovascularization in any tissue.  He is currently investigating the molecular pathways of the angiogenic cascade in the cornea, specifically focusing on the intracellular and tissue level effects of angiopoietins and the Tie2 receptor on endothelial cell proliferation, white blood cell infiltration, and matrix metalloproteinase levels. He is also involved in characterizing the role of the enzyme IDO (indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase) in cornea transplant tolerance and development of neovascularization.  With respect to clinical research, Dr. Ambati is committed to constant analysis of results of cornea transplants, LASIK, cataract extraction, and other anterior segment procedures with a view towards optimization of patient outcomes.
