Date: June 22nd
and 23rd, 2007. Commencement
was held together with the 31st Annual Resident-Alumni
Meeting at the The Ritz-Carlton Lodge of Reynolds Plantation at Lake
Oconee, Georgia. This was the second time we met at this venue.
This year the techs and staff were invited. Most of the department was
present for the meeting. Commencement & Roast. One
of the highlights of this years meeting was the surprise arrival of Dr.
Parag Gokhale from Seattle. Dr. Gokhale moved to Seattle in the
summer of 2006 and since he had known this class for 2 years he wanted
to be a part of their graduation. The question was how to arrange
it. Well, he, Dr. Ulrich and Jenny Roberts coordinated a surprise
arrival. Dr. Gokhale had 4 video's sent to Dr. Ulrich the first
being a pre-recorded monologue on Dr. Gokhale's part where he pretended
to be connecting via satellite link. The other video's were his arrival
by Dr. Evil's Time Machine from Austin Powers. Fireworks over the
Space Needle in Seattle with "thunderous applause" were
playing on the screen when he walked out waving amicably as hero of the
weekend. It went over very well and to no small excitement on the
part of the seniors. Dr. Gokhale then moderated then a.m. resident
paper session in which all three seniors and Dr. Nilson (a second year
resident who had done considerable research with Dr. Gokhale)
presented. Dr.
Nussbaum began the commencement activities with has admonishments to the
departing seniors. Dr. Ambati followed with his
"Superhero" roast of the residents which transitioned into Dr.
Gokhale's (presumably final...but who knows...) "Before they were stars!" talk.
In this talk he predicts a fictitious ophthalmic future after these seniors make their
contributions. According to the predictions Dr. Bobo is to rise in
politics with her good heart but strong ideas and powers of
persuasion. Dr. Eifrig is to become a rich, but generous
philanthropist who owns a fleet of ships. Dr. Lott is to become a master
surgeon who incorporates nanotechnology into his eye care. In
a Gilligan's Island / ABC's Lost parody the three of these docs get get
mixed up on an island trying to solve a problem with local quail
eyes. One of Dr. Eifrig's ships with he and Dr. Lott aboard will
get stranded on quail island where it will be up to Dr. Lott to use
nanotech to fix the problems. Eventually, it will take Dr. Bobo's (by
then the governor of Florida) negotiation skills to secure the release
of these other two docs from captivity on quail island. [It's a stretch,
but good for a laugh and a memory.] Dr.
Bobo will enter private practice in Florida. Dr. Eifrig is
pursuing private practice / research, and Dr. Lott will be doing a
medical retina fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Academic
Activities: On Friday Dr. Lane
Ulrich opened the program and we heard from all nine residents
as they presented the research they have been participating in during
the last year. The talks ranged from the retina (new cell
population, neovascularization), the optic nerve (exercise induced
changes and drop compliance), to corneal angiogenesis, room temperature
graft preservation, resident cataract surgery and a rousing video
capture talk. Below are
the talks which were presented by these three graduating
seniors. Dr. Jeff Odel
presented case studies in neuro-ophthalmology as well as how to
distinguish between maculopathy and optic neuropathy. Dr.
Olson presented work on phacoemulsifier's, endophthalmitis and an
introduction to chelation therapy and its effect on cataracts.
