Emergency Ultrasound

The emergency ultrasound section of the department of emergency medicine is an integral part of resident education, research and clinical practice at MCG.

Education:

  • Emergency ultrasound is incorporated into the residency curriculum from the onset of the intern year through hands on activities, lectures, and tape recordings and reviews.
  • Residents are taught basic ultrasound skills as well as cutting edge techniques by credentialed Emergency Medicine physician faculty.
  • All residents will become proficient in basic ultrasound techniques such as
    • FAST
    • Pelvic
    • Aortic
    • Gallbladder
    • DVT
    • Vascular access
    • Renal
    • Soft tissue
    • Bone
    • Cardiac

Clinical Practice

  • Multiple ultrasound machines are available for use in the ED at all times
  • Used to evaluate conditions such as:
    • Trauma
    • Ectopic Pregnancy
    • AAA
    • Cholecystitis/ Cholelithiasis
    • DVT
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chest pain
    • Pelvic pain
    • Abcesses
  • Used for peripheral and central venous access

Research:

  • Ultrasound faculty and residents publish numerous articles and present abstracts and posters at conferences throughout the United States, earning numerous ultrasound awards
  • MCG is currently one of the most prolific sources of emergency ultrasound research in the nation
  • All residents are encouraged to join one or more studies.

Fellowship:

  • Accepts one board eligible graduate yearly 
  • Fellows develop hands on ultrasound skills as well as the administrative duties that are involved with running an emergency ultrasound program. 
  • Fellows have both clinical and teaching responsibilities in the department. 
  • Upon completion of the program, the fellow will be able to obtain RDMS certification, be able to competently run an emergency ultrasound program, as well as instruct other physicians in ultrasound techniques.
