We place an emphasis on scholarly activity in our program.  Apart from simply being an ACGME requirement, we feel that knowledge and experience acquired in the research arena will result in a more complete emergency medicine physician at the end of the training process.  As such, residents are strongly encouraged to begin investigating potential areas of research interest during the earliest days of training and our department has numerous resources to assist residents in the process.  Richard Sattin, M.D., an accomplished researcher with a background at the CDC, was recruited in 2006 to be our departmental Research Director.  He also serves as the Chairman of MCG’s Institutional Review Board.  Our faculty have broad interests and are actively engaged in the production of peer reviewed research.  Some of the most active current areas of focus include emergency ultrasound, hemostatic agents, and HIV.

Our residents present frequently at national conferences such as ACEP.  As an extra incentive, the residency reimburses up to $1000 for conference attendance when research is presented!  We also have a Resident Research Day each Spring dedicated to highlighting the graduating seniors’ scholarly projects.
