Our Mission:

“To Train and Develop Emergency Physicians Who Possess Outstanding Clinical Skills and Practice in a Highly Ethical Manner”

The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) was founded in 1828 as Georgia’s health sciences university.  It is an independent unit of the University System of Georgia, with schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Graduate Studies, Nursing, and Allied Health.  MCG employs about 450 house officers, 800 faculty and 6,000 other employees.  There are over 2,000 students matriculating in all the schools.  MCG offers residency programs in all major medical specialties as well as dentistry and oral surgery.

MCG has long been Georgia’s tertiary care teaching facility and referral hospital.  It was designated in 1981 as the state’s first Level I trauma center, and, in 1993, was accredited as Georgia’s second pediatric trauma center.  The MCG trauma center serves the 13 county East Central Georgia Health District, encompassing a large rural area as well as the Augusta metropolitan area.  The MCG Children’s Medical Center serves as the region’s tertiary referral center for the pediatric population.  Once a floor within MCG proper, it is now a state of the art five-floor hospital attached to MCG and has been in operation since December 1999.

MCG Emergency Services moved into a new facility in early 1992, occupying the ground floor of a new critical care tower adjacent to the main hospital. Currently, we see a broad spectrum of patient conditions and have an annual volume of approximately 75,000 patients.  The ED takes up over 10,000 square feet and has a total of 43 beds.  There is also a 10-bed Observation Unit located adjacent to the main department.  At present, a multi-million dollar renovation and expansion is underway which will enable us to continue to serve our patients' needs as our community expands.

The EM residency is well respected on campus and is consistently one of the strongest residency programs in the institution.  We are an ACGME accredited 3-year program and enjoy full departmental status at MCG.   Our residency has grown significantly from its inception and currently accepts 10 residents per year.

One of the features that make us unique is our affiliation with the United States Army, which began in 2007.  Previously, the army training sites for emergency medicine included Madigan Army Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, and Fort Hood Army Medical Center.  We are proud to participate in training Emergency Medicine physicians that will be serving the country through military service post graduation.  Each year, 3 members of our intern class will come from the military match with the remaining 7 from the civilian match.

Affiliation with the United States Army has enabled us to expand our clinical opportunities beyond MCG.  We now have scheduled rotations and available electives at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, a major military hospital located in Augusta.
