Few people have more first hand experience as a resident than Dr. Shiver. In fact, he enjoyed residency so much that he did it twice! Following medical school graduation from MCG in 1997, he enrolled in the General Surgery training program at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He graduated from the program in 2002 and subsequently became board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
During the latter years of General Surgery training, he becameincreasingly interested in Emergency Medicine. Ultimately, a decision was made to pursue what he felt was his true calling – Emergency Medicine. He subsequently enrolled in the Emergency Medicine training program at MCG and completed the training in 2005.
Dr. Shiver has long been interested in medical student and resident education, and, after the completion of training, decided to pursue a career in academics. He stayed on at MCG as an Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine. The ensuing years brought more direct involvement with the residency and he became Program Director in 2008.
Niche areas of interest include emergency ultrasound, airway, trauma, EKG interpretation, and, of course, education. During his tenure as faculty, he has twice been the recipient of the Faculty Educator of the Year Award and was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2008.
Dr. Shiver’s eight years as a resident provided him with unique insight into the trials and tribulations of resident life. Viewing things from a resident’s perspective comes naturally. He strongly believes that residency can and should be both challenging and enjoyable. His vision for residency training at MCG involves the creation of a rigorous academic and clinical milieu combined with a consistently supportive, resident centered culture.
