Didactics

“Educational Fanaticism”

  • Our residents are encouraged in many different ways to develop habits necessary to become lifelong learners dedicated to ongoing academic growth and refinement.
  • Many clinical monographs and educational podcasts are provided to our residents for their personal review.
  • Our training program is rapidly transitioning in its approach to resident education by applying the most effective learning formats and the latest educational technology.

Didactic month

  • Held in July for the 1st year residents.
  • The month includes lectures on:
    • The core content of emergency medicine
    • A hands-on introduction to ultrasound
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support)
    • BDLS (Basic Disaster Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • 7-8 ED shifts

Formal conference

  • Each Thursday from 7 am to 12 pm
  • During this time residents are excused from all clinical responsibilities.

Morning rounds

  • A 60 minute daily educational conference is held every morning in the ED.
  • It is an academically intense conference during which interesting emergency department cases are reviewed by residents and faculty.

JournalMonthly journal clubs

  • Held at faculty homes.
  • During this time residents are excused from all ED clinical responsibilities.

Each resident is given the Rosen’s Emergency Medicine text.

MCG Doctor Reviews RecordsA monthly reading schedule is provided.

  • The reading schedule allows the residents to complete Rosen’s Emergency Medicine text twice during their residency.
  • Quizzes are based on the reading schedule.

In Training Exam For two years consecutively, our average in training exam scores placed us at the 88th percentile nationally.  And, faculty members have submitted annually to a head shaving ritual in honor of our high scores.

 

Cadaver labs

  • Held biannually
  • Provide opportunities for practicing procedures including
    • fiberoptic intubations
    • intraosseous and central lines
    • pericardiocentesis
    • thoracotomies
    • and many others.

Procedure Labs are available monthly using the porcine model and are an annual training requirement for our residents.  Training in high risk procedures is accomplished.

Funding is available to all residents to attend a variety of medical conferences throughout the country including GCEP, EMRA, ACEP, and others. Residents routinely present research at these meetings.
