Didactic month
- Held in July for the 1st year residents.
- The month includes lectures on:
- The core content of emergency medicine
- A hands-on introduction to ultrasound
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support)
- BDLS (Basic Disaster Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- 7-8 ED shifts
Formal conference
- Each Thursday from 7 am to 12 pm
- During this time residents are excused from all clinical responsibilities.
Morning rounds
- A 60 minute daily educational conference is held every morning in the ED.
- It is an academically intense conference during which interesting emergency department cases are reviewed by residents and faculty.
Monthly journal clubs
- Held at faculty homes.
- During this time residents are excused from all ED clinical responsibilities.
Each resident is given the Rosen’s Emergency Medicine text.

A monthly reading schedule is provided.
- The reading schedule allows the residents to complete Rosen’s Emergency Medicine text twice during their residency.
- Quizzes are based on the reading schedule.
Cadaver labs 
- Held biannually
- Provide opportunities for practicing procedures including:
- fiberoptic intubations
- intraosseous and central lines
- pericardiocentesis
- thoracotomies
- and many others.
Procedure Labs are available monthly using the porcine model and are an annual training requirement for our residents. Training in high risk procedures is accomplished. (Procedure labs are conducted at both MCG and at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center - DDEAMC - at nearby Fort Gordon.)
Funding is available to all
residents to attend a variety of medical conferences throughout the
country including GCEP, EMRA, ACEP, and others. Residents routinely
present research at these meetings.
