Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at the Medical College of
Georgia receives its accreditation through the Residency Review
Committee for Emergency Medicine and accepts one applicant a year for a
two year fellowship. Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow may
sit for the subspecialty boards through the American Board of Emergency
Medicine.
Goals
-
To provide the interested candidate with concentrated clinical
training in the care of the acutely ill or injured child.
- To train an academic pediatric emergency medicine specialist who
will gain the needed expertise to not only practice confidently and
proficiently when faced with the ill or injured child, but who will
be an expert in the field.
- To become proficient at the supervision and education of others
who provide pediatric emergency care
- To learn how to conduct research that focuses on the unique
aspects of ill or injured children.

First Year Rotations
- Pediatric Emergency Medicine 7 months with 3 weeks of vacation

Curriculum Goals
First Year Goals:
Clinical:
To become clinically proficient at the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment
and disposition of pediatric patients with emergent and urgent complaints
Exposure to a broad range of undifferentiated chief complaints in a
diverse pediatric population
Gain competency in pediatric emergency skills
Teaching:
To be formally introduced to lecture development, presentation and
teaching skills including:
Didactic lessons
Lecture in small and large group settings
Bedside teaching while mentoring students and residents
Administrative:
To become aware of issues involved in running a children’s emergency
department and in pediatric health care issues
Shadow a medical director
Be involved in administrative, legislative, and/or EMS-C issues
Be involved in quality assurance issues for the hospital
Be a guest member of committees in the hospital setting regarding
children (i.e. code committee, sedation committee, etc)
Research:
Introduction to research and development of a research project
including:
Didactic sessions
Assignment of a research mentor
Review of literature, journals
Second Year Goals
Clinical: To gain autonomy in decision making and running the pediatric emergency
department
To help develop clinical guidelines for pediatric emergency medicine
patients
To become proficient and to teach pediatric emergency medicine procedures and skills
Teaching:
To teach/lecture at a regional or national convention
To teach/lecture to bodies outside of the subspecialty
To help refine and develop curriculum for the pediatric emergency
medicine fellowship
To help with the medical student rotations in the pediatric emergency
department
Administrative:
To refine an administrative project
To manage and run the PEM morbidity and mortality conference for the
department
To be involved in QA/QI projects within the department
Research:
To continue didactic sessions in research and literature review
Finish research project and complete presentation and publication
submission

Requirements of Applicants
- Completion of approved emergency medicine residency
- Acceptability for Georgia licensure
- Certification in ATLS, PALS, NALS - may be accomplished during first
year of fellowship
- Participation is NRMP since 2007
- Accepting applications for academic year 2008
- Applications processed through ERAS
