  International Medicine Fellowship

Curriculum
Revised 3-2005

The outline for the Fellowship follows:

I. On-campus activities

  • 16 hours/week clinical duties
    • Full-time faculty appointment: Half time clinical attending, Half time fellow
    • 4 weeks vacation
    • No extra time away for non-required CME
    • Clinical duties will be higher during months spent at MCG and lower during time away from MCG to allow for extended travel periods.
  • Attendance at resident lectures encouraged but not required
  • 2 afternoons per month in Travel Medicine Clinic on campus
  • Attend 50% of faculty meetings while in country
  • No committee requirements outside of department
  • Teaching of PALS/ACLS etc. optional
  • Animal lab optional
  • Recruitment participation optional except for International Fellow
  • Attendance at one of the following yearly meetings:
    • American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)
    • Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM)
    • Wilderness Medicine Society (WMS)
    • International Society of Tropical Medicine (ISTM)

II. Working Medical Trips

  • 10-14 days minimum time in field per trip
  • One trip as team member/assistant team leader
    • Travel with Missions to the World (MTW, Atlanta GA): bound by MTW rules
    • Travel with MCG: bound by MCG rules
  • One trip as team leader
    • With MTW if candidate meets Presbyterian Church of America criteria
    • With outside group if candidate does not meet criteria or prefers not to work with this agency. In this case, the Fellow must make arrangements. An MCG faculty member must be on trip either way.
  • Fellow will be accompanied by MCG EM faculty member
  • Any significant breach of the applicable rules will result in immediate removal from the field and a return of the Fellow to the United States. After remediation, a supervised replacement trip must be arranged at the Fellow’s expense.

III. Course Director for International CME conference at MCG

  • One week course
  • Short-term working medical trip personnel are target audience
  • Try to attract local and national audience
  • This is a non-religious conference

IV. Off-Campus Time

  • Two working medical trips (see above)
  • Short Diploma Course in Tropical Medicine. Estimate 6-9 week duration. Choice of:
    • Gorgas Course: (9 weeks) preferred. All expenses paid, Lima Peru.
    • Walter Reed Course
    • Johns Hopkins Course
  • Choice of Gorgas Expert Course or Bangkok course in tropical diseases. 2 ½ weeks with travel.
  • H.E.A.R.T. institute course, Warner Southern College, Florida. Intense 3 week immersion in cross-cultural and community development skills to prepare for career in a third world setting.
  • American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTM) annual meeting. One week.
  • Disaster training course (through MCG). 4 days.
  • Choice of the following
    • HELP program, Johns Hopkins University. Humanitarian relief in large populations. 3 weeks.
    • Ambassadors Meeting: Training of Trainers (Public Health training)
  • Approximate total time off campus, including two trips focused on provision of medical care to impoverished third-world patients, is 23 weeks.
  • All off-campus activities to be funded by the MCG Department of Emergency Medicine.
    • Tuition/registration fees
    • Stipend for meals
    • Travel expense reimbursement, including housing

V. On-campus academic requirements

  • Research project
    • Field project conducted on overseas trip
    • Abstract must be produced and submitted to a National Meeting
  • Lectures: Deliver minimum of three lectures per year on International-related topics.
  • Reading
    • Dupont and Steffan text
    • Textbook of Travel Medicine and Health
    • Will have monthly quizzes on material covered, all must be passed.
    • Fellow to produce 3 questions per chapter for following year’s fellow.

VI. Graduation Requirements

  • Pass Gorgas Course or equivalent
  • Submit abstract of research
  • Lead one team in the field
  • Successful completion of components of the Fellowship

VIII. Requirements for acceptance into fellowship

  • Graduate of Emergency Medicine Residency
  • Able to obtain medical license in the state of Georgia. License must be obtained prior to arrival at MCG; estimate 8-10 weeks to do so if coming from another state.
  • Must be able to obtain Passport and Visa; Passport should be in hand at the start of the fellowship.
  • Interview on Medical College of Georgia campus
  • Able to fulfill extensive travel requirements
  • Willing to help to revise and improve the program for future fellows
  • Membership in any church or participation in any organized religion is specifically NOT required.

IX. Benefits

  • Vaccinations and medications will be covered/reimbursed
  • Full medical insurance in and out of country is provided, including evacuation air transport from a foreign country (if needed).
  • MCG has an excellent additional benefits package that is available to all faculty, provided the Fellow does not engage in moonlighting activities off campus. Extra
  • MCG ED shifts are available for additional salary on an irregular basis.
  • CME book allowance is provided
