International Medicine
The Department of Emergency Medicine, through its International
Medicine initiative, offers MCG students, staff, residents and faculty
the opportunity to travel and practice medicine in various countries
around the world each year.
Students may elect to travel for credit (Emergency Medicine elective
5007) and residents, with the permission of their residency director,
may also travel for elective credit.
Information on trips and teams can be obtained from either Dr. Ted Kuhn,
or Dr. Hartmut Gross, , co-directors of International Medicine.
Opportunities are listed below. Each opportunity will be designated
as Low, Intermediate, Substantial or High risk. Participation in a high
risk team normally requires previous experience on a lower risk team or
special permission from either Dr. Gross or Kuhn.
Prior trips for 2004 – 2005 include:
Bangladesh
- The team was a primary care team working in a remote eastern
hill tract area of Bangladesh with several tribal groups along the
Myanmar border.
Peru
- The course “Preparing for Medical Leadership Roles in the
Developing World” is in its 6th year and CME credit through MCG is
offered (39 CME credits).
East Asia
- The team was responsible for a training module in emergency
medicine at a large teaching hospital and subspecialty (pediatric)
consultation at another teaching hospital. There were also
opportunities to teach medical English.
Kenya
- Medical care was provided to slum dwellers and those with HIV in
a very large slum within the city.
Ethiopia
- This was a primary care team to the slums of Addis Ababa where
care was rendered mostly to those who are HIV positive and to street
children.
Belize
- The team held rural clinics near Patchakan
Ecuador
- Our team worked in Guyaquil at a clinic for women and children.
Responsibilities included prenatal screening, prenatal ultrasounds,
well baby checks and emergency care for mothers and children as well
as education on prenatal care and breast feeding issues.
Ligioneer, Pennsylvania
- International disaster training. This is a 4 day course for
those who wish to participate on international disaster response
teams.
Atlanta, Georgia
- Medical missions conference with 25 hours of medical breakout
sessions.
Middle East
- This is an academic team that travels to a large medical
university in the Middle East
Myanmar
- Team planned for remote hill tract area of Myanmar. This was a
primary care team working with the Chin people.
Honduras
- Course- “Preparing for Medical Leadership Roles in the
Developing World”. Intensive course held once a year outside
the US to prepared medical practitioners for work in the
developing world.
June 16- July 4, 2005 MCG MCO Team #2- Philippines
- This is an MCG medical student team to rural Philippines to
the southern end of the island of Luzon.
- Faculty will provide supervised clinical care with 1st, 2nd
and 4th year MCG medical students and nursing students
participating in care.
August 24-28, 2005 Ligioneer, Pennsylvania
- International disaster training.
- This is a 4-day course for those who wish to participate on
international disaster response teams.
- Participation in this course is a pre-requisite for
participation on the international disaster team.
October 11-23, 2005 Vietnam
- Team members should be experienced and/or have participated
on a previous team at the substantial or high-risk levels.
January 2006 Myanmar
- Team planned for remote hill tract area of Myanmar. This
will be a primary care team working with the Chin people. Team
may join the Bangladesh team in February if desired.
February 2006, Bangladesh-
- Primary care team to the Bandarban Hill tracts.
- Team will work in remote villages with the Bawm, Chakma and
Mru tribes.
- This will be a continuation of the team to Myanmar- see
above.
March 2006 Location and dates To Be Announced
- This is a training course jointly sponsored by MCG and MTW.
- The course “Preparing for Medical Leadership Roles in the
Developing World” is in its 8th year and CME credit through MCG
is offered. Brochure available.
May 7-20, 2006 Thailand
- “Asian Clinical Tropical Medicine” course- that is
co-sponsored by MCG and Mahidol Faculty of Tropical Medicine.
- This is an “expert” course in clinical tropical medicine and
will provide both didactic instruction on tropical diseases
common to SE Asia as well as in depth clinical opportunity to
examine patients with these illnesses.
- Optional visit to Ankor Wat, Cambodia
June 2006 Kenya
- This is a team for MCG students to the slums of Nairobi.
- Medical care will be provided to slum dwellers and those
with HIV in a very large slum within the city.
The International Medicine Fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia,
Department of Emergency Medicine, is designed to be a one-year course.
There is no formal board or accreditation for this fellowship, leaving
the design up to the Fellowship Committee made up of Drs. James Wilde,
Ted Kuhn, and Hartmut Gross. Candidates for the Fellowship must have
successfully completed an accredited emergency medicine residency and be
Board Eligible or Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. Funding will be
through revenues generated as a half-time clinical faculty member in the
Department of Emergency Medicine, although the salary will be less than
half-time salary to allow for funding of off-campus activities.
