Pediatric Emergency Medicine

  • Developed in 1997 by former Chairman of the Department, Dr. Larry Mellick, FAAP, FACEP
  • A recognized section within the Emergency Department.
  • Our Medical Director and Section Chief reports directly to the Chairman, Dr. Richard Schwartz, FACEP

Our mission:

  • To provide state of the art critical care for children and infants suffering from acute medical illness and injury
  • To provide the academic environment in Pediatric Emergency Medicine for the department’s general emergency medicine residency and for the associated pediatric residency.

Natalie Lane, MD, FAAP

  • Section Chief and Fellowship Director
  • Faculty member since 1997
  • Board certified pediatric emergency medicine physician
  • Board certified general pediatrician
  • Coordinator of pediatric resident ED rotation and fourth year pediatric ED rotation
  • Academic interests include pediatric respiratory disease, education in pediatric emergency medicine, and emergency medical services for children

Jim Wilde, MD, FAAP, FACEP

  • Medical Director of the Children’s Medical Center ED, Director of Student Research within the ED
  • Faculty member since 1998
  • Board certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician
  • Board Certified General Pediatrician
  • Medical Director, Georgia United Against Antibiotic Resistant Disease (GUARD), Georgia's Chapter of the CDC's "Get Smart" program for judicious antibiotic use.
  • Fellowship trained in Pediatric Infectious Disease at Johns Hopkins University
  • Research interests include influenza, judicious use of antibiotics, practice differences between emergency medicine and pediatric emergency medicine physicians, and medical malpractice


Lorna Bell, MD, FAAP

  • Faculty member since 1997

  • Academic interests include child physical and sexual abuse

Mark Lopez, MD, FAAP, FACEP

  • Director Medical Student Rotation
  • Faculty member since 2001
  • Board certified General Pediatrician
  • Board certified Emergency Medicine Physician
  • Duties are split between the General and Pediatric ED
  • Academic interests include pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services and brown recluse spider bites

Lynne Coule, MD, FAAP

  • Regional PALS Director
  • Faculty member since 2002

  • Board certified Pediatric Critical Care Physician
  • Academic interests include mock codes, coding issues and adult education

Amy Pulchalski, MD, FAAP

  • Faculty member since 2003
  • Board certified General Pediatrician
  • Board certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician
  • Member of the South Carolina Children's Trust Fund Board of Trustees
  • Academic interests include infant complaints in the ED setting

Larry Mellick, MD, FAAP, FACEP

  • Chairman of the Department from 1996 – 2004
  • Faculty member since 1996

  • Board certified Emergency Medicine Physician
  • Board certified General Pediatrician
  • Academic interests include headache treatments and code organization


Jennifer Tucker, MD, FAAP

  • Faculty Member since 2005
  • Board certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician

  • Academic interests include Trauma
  • We are the guiding force for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine body of knowledge for the ED residency and Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship
  • We participate in departmental, hospital and medical school committees
  • We meet weekly for Fellows conference and monthly for our own section meetings and journal clubs
