History of the Sickle Cell Center

Current Research

Dr. Robert J. Adams, Neurology, performing a TCDThe Sickle Cell Center at the Medical College of Georgia has been involved in research projects dealing with various aspects of sickle cell disease since its inception. It is the home for  STOP I & II  which are led by Dr. Robert J. Adams, Regent’s Professor of Neurology at MCG. This multi-center study conducted in the US and Canada showed that transfusions can prevent first-time stroke in children with sickle cell disease who are identified to be at high risk with TCD (Transcranial Doppler).  The STOP II study, started July 1, 2000, and is investigating the duration of transfusion required to minimize the risk in children with high TCD. The Hemoglobinopathy Laboratory also serves as the Core Laboratory for the Multi-Center STOP and STOP II studies.
