The Leadership Academy is a member driven organization attached to and governed by the Medical College of Georgia’s Center for Patient- and Family-Centered Care.
The Leadership Academy seeks to acknowledge, cultivate, promote and support the clinical practice, education and research of a patient- and family-centered approach to health care at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), the MCG Health System (MCG Health, Inc.), Physicians Practice Group (PPG) and their affiliates.
The Leadership Academy is designed to recognize patient- and family-centered leaders and practitioners and to support their efforts to nurture this philosophy within MCG campus, hospitals, practice groups and programs.

MCG patients, MCG students and employees, Augustans, neighboring communities in Georgia and South Carolina, and national and international colleagues benefit from the Academy’s efforts to acknowledge, promote and distill patient- and family-centered values and practices. Through consultation services Academy members influence hospitals, academic institutions and professional medical associations worldwide.
Patient- and family-centered values and practices positively impact patient experiences and health outcomes, promote safety and help improve the quality of health care in our communities, across the nation and abroad.
Membership in the Leadership Academy formally recognizes MCG leaders who have demonstrated an ability to lead patient- and family-centered care developments.
Members are a diverse group and may be comprised of:
front-line staff from any department in the MCG schools, hospital or practice group
faculty from any school
patients or family members
management leaders
Leadership Academy members have the responsibility to support the values and principles of patient- and family-centered care through their own professional work.
Members are encouraged to participate, on a voluntary basis, in opportunities to mentor, educate, consult, and train health care workers from within MCG and other institutions.
Academy members are preferentially provided opportunities to represent the Center for Patient- and Family-Centered Care, the College and the Health System at national
meetings or for on-site visits during the Center’s Learning Laboratories.
The Leadership Academy offers recognition, collegial support, information sharing, leadership opportunities and advancement. Members provide guidance for MCG services, programs and facilities development and to external customers. They have represented MCG at campus-sponsored events and regional, national and international conferences.
Additional member benefits include:
Identification in written publications
Listing in the Leadership Academy Directory on the Center for Patient- and Family-Centered Care website
Enhanced ability to network with other MCG leaders
Opportunity to connect with others from the U.S. or other countries working in patient- and family-centered care domains
Letter of Leadership Academy Member recognition provided to the individual and their supervisor

Individuals within the MCG campus and MCG Health System communities are invited to participate in the Leadership Academy if they demonstrate or model a patient- and family-centered focus in their work, teaching, research and publications. Other criteria include active participation in the development of the Center for Patient- and Family-Centered Care programs.
Membership in the Leadership Academy requires a completed application submitted to the Center for Patient- and Family-Centered Care for review and approval. A patient, student, faculty member, researcher or staff member committed to and exemplifying patient- and family-centered values through practice can be invited to apply for membership or be nominated by an Academy member.
