Highlights

The mission of the Center for Health Care Improvement is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care delivery, through education in health care policy and practice, health services research, and the use of information systems for health care delivery.

The CHI is a collaboration between the public and private sectors within the state as it offers an unrivaled opportunity to teach future generations of health care professionals about the changing health care market and to undertake research aimed at improving the effectiveness and efficiency of health care delivery.

The CHI provides an opportunity for collaboration between Georgia's largest health maintenance organization, BlueCross BlueShield of Georgia and the state medical school, Medical College of Georgia

Specifically, the creation of the CHI has brought many opportunities for research, education and health service development to BCBS-GA and MCG.

Research Program
Our initial request for novel research proposals within the managed care arena produced an overwhelming response from BCBS-GA staff and MCG faculty. These funded research projects have led to numerous publications, national presentations, and external funding.

Graduate Education Program
The traditional model of health care is characterized by fee for service, multi-specialty, uncoordinated care. This model is increasingly subject to scrutiny by the medical profession, patients, hospitals, clinics, and third-party payers. As an alternative, managed care promotes the coordination of health-care services by primary-care physicians and alternative payment schemes including capitated fee structures. Medical students and residents need to understand how the modern managed care system works, including the managed care principles and how to apply the population health-care perspectives now being promoted by the managed-care industry. To that end, the CHI now delivers a mini-residency in managed care, designed to meet the needs of future generations of physicians who will have greater interaction with a managed care environment.
