disparities
Unfortunately, disparities in the receipt of health care as well as outcomes have plagued our health system for many years. The Center for Healthcare Improvement believes that research into health disparities is vital to improving the quality of health care for all. We are currently conducting a focus group to determine how the perceptions of diabetes care may differ between racial groups, and how these different perceptions may impact care. Also, the information from the focus groups will be used to better understand what the health care system can do to facilitate improved self-care among patients with diabetes. Future directions include studies on the use of information technology to improve patient-provider communications through the use of health literacy screening and tailoring of information. It is hoped that providing health information in a format that is appropriate to the patients' health literacy level will empower the patient to take a more active role in his or her health care, thereby improving overall health outcomes.
