PURPOSE
Being a competent, well-rounded general dentist requires knowledge and skills in the many areas of dentistry. The dental team must have not only a good understanding of diagnosis, treatment planning and delivery, but also be knowledgeable regarding dental materials and how to make sense of the literature in terms of what is important versus what are just marketing claims. Topics will also include management of dental implants, techniques for fabrication of immediate dentures and implant supported overdentures, and intraoral effects of systemic medications.

OBJECTIVES

This course will enable participants to:

  • Have a better understanding of the factors that must be considered in
    treatment planning and the delivery of care to yield functional and esthetic success with dental implants
  • Have a better understanding of how to better evaluate the literature regarding dental materials, and make appropriate decisions on when to incorporate new materials that is based on sound scientific research
  • Develop a better understanding for treatment planning and execution of treatment for patients in need of immediate dentures and implant- supported overdentures
  • Become more familiar with the oral effects of systemic medications and have a better understanding of newer treatments aimed at managing these oral conditions

Techniques and tips for the fabrication of Immediate Placement Dentures that will make the experience a pleasant and predictable outcome for both the patient and the practitioner. A simple overview of two methods to provide implant retained mandibular overdentures for patients who require additional retention and stability to function successfully with a mandibular denture.

Many commonly prescribed medications have associated dental and oral manifestations that are often non-specific and can vary in significance. CO-COURSE DIRECTORS

Dr. S. DeRossiScott DeRossi, D.M.D., MCG Associate Professor of Oral Medicine and Chair of Oral Health and Diagnostic Sciences, received his dental degree and postdoctoral training in oral medicine from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Dr. DeRossi, who has had an oral medicine practice for over 11 years, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine. He received an Earl Bank Hoyt Teaching Award from the University of Pennsylvania, where he held a faculty position before joining MCG. He co-authored a Burket’s Oral Medicine textbook and lectures and publishes extensively on all aspects of oral medicine.

 

Dr. B. HammondBarry Hammond, D.M.D., a 1986 graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine, completed a general practice residency in Chapel Hill, N.C. Dr. Hammond maintained a private practice for 15 years, emphasizing restorative and esthetic dentistry. He is an L.D. Pankey Institute alumnus and taught for several years with the Ross Nash Institute for Dental Learning in Charlotte, N.C. Dr. Hammond joined the MCG School of Dentistry faculty in 2006 and lectures on esthetic techniques and materials and the role of occlusion in predictability. He serves as Assistant Director of the CE Advisory Committee for the School of Dentistry. Dr. Hammond is the University Advisory Council Member for the Medical College of Georgia to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Other organizational memberships include the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry and the American  Dental Education Association.

 

MEDICAL COLLEGE OF GEORGIA FACULTY

Dr. AbreuAmara Abreu, D.D.S., M.S., received her dental degree in Venezuela. She completed a Certificate in Prosthodontics and a Master in Dental Sciences in the University of Puerto Rico. She is a member of the American College of Prosthodontists, and joined MCG School of Dentistry, Oral Rehabilitation Department in 2006. She teaches at graduate and undergraduate level in the areas of fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics. She has presented at national and international meetings, and has various publications.

 

Dr. HolmesR. Gary Holmes, D.M.D., M.S., Associate Professor in the MCG Department of Oral Rehabilitation. He is an alumnus of the MCG School of Dentistry and Graduate Studies. Dr. Holmes joined the MCG faculty after 10 years of private practice and military contracting and maintains a private practice in the intramural faculty dental practice. He is the course director of the freshman Dental Anatomy and Occlusion class and teaches in Operative Dentistry, Dental Materials and Complete Dentures. Dr. Holmes is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is a past-president of the eastern district of the Georgia Dental Association.

 


Dr. PlummerKevin D. Plummer, D.D.S., B.S., Associate Professor in the MCG Department of Oral Rehabilitation, School of Dentistry. Received his DDS from Emory University (1979), post graduate training in prosthodontics from the U.S. Army Prosthodontic Program (1986) and is certified by the American Board of Prosthodontics (1987). Chair of the MCG SOD Infection Control and Hazards Committee and member of the MCG Institutional Chemical Safety Committee. Prior to joining the MCG SOD faculty, he served 21 years in the U.S. Army Dental Corps where he was Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General in the areas of Infection Control and OSHA Compliance and Dental Laboratory Operations. Currently the Section Chief of Removable Prosthodontics and the Course Director for Preclinical Removable Partial Dentures, Preclinical Complete Dentures and the Clinical Course Director for Treatment Planning Board and Prosthodontics Clinic.
