PURPOSE
The symposium will provide evidence-based, innovative and practical presentations and interactive workshops. The information will help dental professionals manage patient populations with diverse health needs. Each participant will receive a comprehensive seminar manual for future reference.

CREDIT
This activity includes 11.50 hours of instruction and completion of the entire activity is approved by the Medical College of Georgia for 11.50 Continuing Education Credit Hours.

COURSE DIRECTORS

Marie A. Collins, RDH, MS, EdD, Associate Professor and Chair of Dental Hygiene in the MCG School of Allied Health Sciences and Associate Professor in the MCG School of Dentistry Department of Periodontics and School of Graduate Studies, teaches periodontal instrumentation, research design and basic life support in the dental and dental hygiene curricula.


Keith R. Volkmann, PhD, DMD, Associate Professor of Oral Biology, has expertise in infectious diseases and the immune response in health and disease. He is a Distance Learning Coordinator for the U.S. Army dental
residency programs.

MEDICAL COLLEGE OF GEORGIA FACULTY

Ashley K. Christman, RDH, BS, Instructor in the Medical College of Georgia School of Allied Health Sciences, Department of Dental Hygiene. Mrs. Christman received her bachelor's degree in dental hygiene from the Medical College of Georgia in 1997. In addition to private practice, her dental hygiene experience includes seven years as Public Health hygienist for the East Central Health District.

Charlene A. Czuszak, DDS, MS, Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene and in the Department of Oral Diagnosis. After receiving a Bachelors of Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Czuszak served as a Nurse in the US Army for more than 6 years. She then attended dental school at the University of Texas in San Antonio. Upon graduation, she began an 18-year tenure with the Dental Corps, first as a General Dentist and then a Periodontist, serving in Germany, Missouri and Georgia.

Mary Downey, RDH, MS, Associate Professor in the School of Allied Health Sciences and the School of Graduate Studies at the Medical College of Georgia. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from the Medical College of Georgia in 1974 and her Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1976. Teaching areas of interest include dental hygiene theory and practice, medically compromised patients, clinical dental hygiene and pharmacology. Ms. Downey received the Outstanding Faculty Award for the School of Allied Health Sciences in 2002.

R. Gary Holmes, DMD, Associate Professor in the MCG Department of Oral Rehabilitation. He is an alumnus of the MCG School of Dentistry and Graduate Studies. Dr. Holmes joined the MCG faculty after 10 years of private practice and military contracting and maintains a private practice in the intramural faculty dental practice. He is the course director of the freshman Dental Anatomy and Occlusion class and teaches in Operative Dentistry, Dental Materials and Complete Dentures.

Veerinder Pannu, BDS, RDH, Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Georgia in the Department of Dental Hygiene. Dr. Pannu completed her Bachelors degree in Dentistry from Government Dental College and Hospital, Patiala, India in 1995. She practiced general dentistry and also worked as a Lecturer in Dental Anatomy and Demonstrator in Dental Materials clinic for 5 years at B.R.S Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Panchkula, India. She then attained her Dental Hygiene Diploma in 2006 from The Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene in Mississauga, Canada. She worked in private practice and as a clinical instructor for 1 year in the Dental Hygiene Program at The Canadian Business College in Toronto, Canada.

Ana Luz Thompson, RDH, MHEd, Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene, teaches dental anatomy, dental materials laboratory, radiology and clinic courses. Her main interest is in education and in the further development of interdisciplinary research involving dental hygiene.

GUEST FACULTY

J. DorstJackie Dorst, RDH, BS, is an international speaker, author and consultant on infection prevention, safety and instrument sterilization. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of Georgia and is a Dental Hygiene graduate of Clayton State University. Her speaking credentials include the International Orthodontic Congress in Paris, the 3rd International Congress of Dental Technology in Yokohama, Japan, the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Association of Endodontists, the Hinman Dental Meeting and the Yankee Dental Congress. Jackie is a member of the Organization for Safety & Asepsis Procedures, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, the National Speakers Association and she is OSHA certified to deliver safety training courses.

R. GrahamReneé Graham, RDH, MEd
Southeast Clinical Educator for Dentsply International, Professional Division, received a dental hygiene degree from Darton College and Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Valdosta State University. She has 19 years of clinical experience in general and periodontal practices and 11 years of academic experience. She directed dental programs at Valdosta Technical College in Valdosta, Georgia for 10 years. Renee is a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation and a member of the Georgia Dental Hygiene Educators Association.

 

W. KarpWarren B. Karp, PhD, DMD, MCG Emeritus Professor Emeritus in the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, has a Ph.D. in biochemical nutrition from the Ohio State University and a Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia. He is an elected member of the American Institute of Nutrition and is past president of the Georgia Nutrition Council. He has directed the Nutrition Consult Service at the MCG School of Dentistry for 20 years. He is a member of the State of Georgia’s Governor’s Obesity Task Force and the Columbia County Board of Health.

 

Deborak KruegerDeborah Andrews Krueger, RDH, BS, is a dental hygienist with 38 years experience in private practice, research and public health. She is currently a Certified Public Health Dental Hygienist with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. She is a recognized winner of the Becky Bowden Outstanding Hygienist Award, Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction, and NCPHA George G. Dudney Award. Her presentations at local and state professional meetings as well as the Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting and the Greater New York Dental Meeting have earned outstanding evaluations. Deborah’s many years of experience give her presentations a “real world” flavor, spiced with anecdotal stories and down home humor which make her lectures interesting as well as informative.

Savannah Marriott RiverwalkThe Marriott Riverfront Hotel, Savannah, Georgia, the symposium host hotel, is located on historic River Street where warehouses have been converted to specialty shops and restaurants.

Savannah offers abundant opportunities for sightseeing via horse-drawn carriage rides, riverboat cruises and  historical tours. Savannah’s Tybee Beach is only 30 minutes away.

Forsyth FountainLaid out by General James Oglethorpe in 1733 as the first settlement in the colony of Georgia, the city of Savannah retains much of its original 18th century flavor.
