Management of Parathyroid Disease

Purpose
This course will offer the latest information on the medical and surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid diseases, emphasizing minimally invasive surgical techniques through didactic lectures, panel discussions and hands-on cadaver laboratory practice.

Objectives
This course should enable participants to:

  • Understand the use of ultrasound, sestamibi scans, PET and PET-CT for patients with thyroid and parathyroid disorders

  • Describe a treatment algorithm for a thyroid nodule

  • Review the medical management of thyroid and parathyroid dysfunction and the indications for surgical intervention

  • Describe the preoperative medical preparation of hyperthyroid patients and manage postoperative complications

  • Review surgical approaches to the thyroid compartment

  • Learn the value and limitations of laryngeal nerve-monitoring

  • Understand the latest minimally invasive techniques for approaching the thyroid compartment and their indications

  • Review the management of thyroid cancer, including indications for neck dissection and adjuvant therapy

Targeted Audience
This course is designed for practicing otolaryngologists and head and neck surgeons interested in state-of-the-art medical and surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid disorders.

Visiting Scholar Program: Week-long preceptorship in the Endocrine Surgery Program at the University of Pisa available for a nominal administrative fee.

The registration fee includes a course syllabus containing supplemental material and abstracts of the presentations. Early registration is encouraged as laboratory enrollment is limited. Please use the online registration form.

The registration fee is $1,295 for the lectures and one cadaver dissection lab. (The three hour lab session is limited to 20 participants per day for a maximum of 40 total lab participants.) NO refunds for cancellations will be made after Feb. 8, 2008; half will be refunded before that date.

Marriott Hotel in AugustaThe conference will be held at the Augusta Marriott Hotel, Two Tenth Street, Augusta, Georgia 30901. The dissection laboratories will be held in the Anatomy Department on the Medical College of Georgia Campus.Note: Transportation will be provided between the hotel and the lab.
